I get what you are saying. I don't think it's conscious. I just think that it's easy to "change your mind" when everyone else around you is already starting to change their minds. Our ape brains, I suspect, make us believe we are actually having a personal epiphany when we are really just going with the trend.

SF is a perfect example of this.

Exactly. Here we bring things full circle and hence the changing attitudes about brown suede shoes.

Exactly. You can look nice, wear nice stuff, just do so quietly. When a co-worker asked me one casual Friday "What sweater is that? I really like it." It was Hermes… I responded, "cardigan". She looked confused.. lol.

Has this really been a thing? I've always loved brown suede shoes!

It's not about position in life or the workplace. It's how obnoxious it is to discuss your expensive clothing brands, expensive car and whatnot. My immediate thought upon hearing something like that would be how much my clients would hate dealing with this obnoxious asshole.

    And I agree, too pointy.

I think both of you are correct - one of those things is more obnoxious but neither will be viewed too favorably.

    Love it.

I'm not saying that everyone is just going with the flow, however I have noticed a marked increase in people who view brown suede as the closest thing to a "one shoe". I think most of it is @Claghorn 's fault.

Shoes are the least of their sins.

I’ve been thinking for some time of starting a thread entitled “Dress in Academia.” Given the number of contexts in which the topic has already arisen I suspect that there would be enough interest to justify it. If anyone agrees, just give this post a thumb or drop me a PM. If I get enough interest I’ll try to get around to it within a week (a bit buried in committee work right now).

I don’t want to be responsible for moving this current thread beyond its actual remit, so I’d prefer not to discuss it here. Thumbs or PMs, please.

    Cheers,

    Ac

Anything that stops this one thread from blowing up my inbox is OK by me.

You get SF emails? I just use site only notifications for everything. So much easier. I probably should set an email notification for PM's, though.

Also, Caustic's post should be read as: Anyone who does not like me, please post over and over all day long.

Email notes is how I have been doing things for years. As inconvenient as it can be to get 1000 email notifications a day from one thread (I have actually unsubscribed from this thread for long periods) it is better than having to come back and check the site all the time.

Interestingly, I've never had a boss mention it other than extremely positively (students mostly dig it, too), it's my colleagues. Which, as the ants will tell you, makes more sense.
I DID have a Department Chair once come by my office in my first academic post to basically say "stop coming in from 8 AM to 6 PM every day, it's freaking people out". That was one time I was happy to go with the flow!

    Wait wut?
That is something I would never say...and rarely would have need to, sadly.
