I usually use the "Hi, are you looking for anything specific or just browsing today?" gives people space to tell em to fuck off without feeling bad about it.
SERIOUSLY YOU SAY THAT? A person could think... Are you assuming I'm just window shopping and not buying anything? Do you think I don't have the capacity to buy anything? -.- never assume anything, a simple Hello, how may I help you or do let us know if you need help.

I never know how to respond to the question, "Did anyone help you today?"

Does "Hello, do you need any help with anything?" followed by "No, thank you. Just browsing," count as being helped? I wasn't ignored, so I wouldn't want to malign the staff member in question; but I technically wasn't helped. Why do they ask this question? Just to reassure the customer that they "care"? Or does it have an impact on the staff member's commission?

I'll usually respond with the affirmative, then try to guess which of the three identical blondes in identical sweaters was the one who "helped" me. Even worse, I've been greeted by one black SA at the door, accidentally pointed out another black SA during the whole "did anyone help you" survey, then saw the other fellow on the way out. Great, now I'm racist, too. [IMG]

If no one helped me, then my answer is "no".

You can answer any way you like, such as... I'm fine at the moment, I don't need any help right now, thank you. And then if you are waiting for the wife to finish shopping and feeling a little bored.. I notice you have some fine sports jackets over there, I love the roped shoulder, and lapel roll, and the open quarters and the button stance are just perfect. Unfortunately none of the materials currently work with my tie and pocket square collection. Will you be getting any new stock of those in the near future. Perhaps in a lighter navy or french blue lightweight fresco. Do you happen to know a decent dry cleaner in the area? How often do you suggest I have my pants and suit dry cleaned? Which alterations tailor do you recommend? You have those interesting pant hangers, how do they work? etc etc. until the wife comes and drags you away.

Whenever I cashier, I always ask if anyone offered them help rather than gave them help. More often than not, someone tries and offers but I don't want/need it; the employees should not be penalized for me being independent.
