I decided to make this a full fledged post since many people may not go back and read the 'Vital Mag' post. Anyway, Vitals is offering free subscriptions at www.vitalsmag.com Enjoy, Harami.

I found it ok, with the potential to be really good. IE, some decent articles, suggestions, good clothing pics/choices.

How long has this magazine been out? What other magazines does it compare to? GQ? Cargo? Esquire?

I got a free issue yesterday too. Not bad, especially compared side by side with Cargo. That mag sucks.

Got my free copy yesterday, too. I'm not so impressed: it's basically the same thing as "Lucky" (i.e., pictures of things to buy), except for guys. Very little of the merchandise is high end.

But it's certainly the best free magazine I've ever received.

They have a "valet" service that is supposed to get you specific items featured in the magazine. Â In the first issue (Matt Damon on cover) there were "t" shirts that I was interested in. Â They claimed to have them at Barneys....so I went there and they had no idea what I was talking about. Â Sent an email to the "valet"....nothing. Â Sent another...got the "order form" requiring my CC # and info - with no sense of when or if anything would happen. Â Four weeks later - still nothing from Vitals Valet. Â So I "cancelled" the order and found the "t" shirts myself. Â Great idea - poorly executed (so far). [IMG]

There's also a mail in post cards inside the magazine where they'll continue your free subscription for a year. Sounds good, but I'm suspicious. There has to be a catch somewhere.

Maybe the catch is, they have to have circulation so that advertisers will buy ad space, and they can make money and eventually start charging for a magazine with a reputation, etc... gotta get the ball rolling somehow, no one's gonna pay for a subscription to a brand new unknown magazine. I'm waiting on my copy, filled the thing out a couple weeks ago.

Speaking of which, has anyone seen Vice? It's a free mag that comes out in the 'alternative' places around my area and I assume elsewhere, some ads but some good articles and stuff, glossy, full color etc. I often wondered how they could give that away.

I read Vice online. Didn't know it was given out free. It is often goodstuff, like southpark except imagine if Trey and Matt weren't from stable homes. Vice

Across the board, magazines and newspapers make their money from advertising. Subscription or newstand charges barely cover (and often fail to cover) distribution costs. Has anyone seen a September Vogue recently? It must weigh 5 pounds--try shipping over a million of those, or whatever their circ. is these days.

I second the recommendation of Vice. They even have a clothing store in NYC. How's that for a circular topic?
