Dressing down BB tartan dinner jacket?

I rarely post but I enjoy reading threads. Today I have a question. Here is the specific article of clothing: http://www.brooksbrothers.com/Fitzg...ar_MZ00025_Color=DKGR&contentpos=60&cgid=0235

The BB tartan dinner jacket can obviously be worn at a semi-formal affair with traditional accoutrement, but I'm wondering how one would dress it down?

An upcoming event will likely not include any black tie attire, but there will be a few smoking jackets and the rest of the men in suits and blazers. I'd like to wear this tartan dinner jacket but without side-striped formal pants, bib shirt, or cummerbund. Blue jeans is too casual for me in this case.

My rationale is that I'd have to wear wool pants, not any kind of cotton. So crisp, creased charcoal grey slacks, a button down French cuff shirt (maybe light blue?) and bow tie seem like a possibility. But I don't want to look like I don't know what I'm doing though.

I could always wear a suit or blazer, but this jacket could be a fun alternative. I'm curious to hear the thoughts of the resident experts!

    Thank you,
