Bodega (shop.bdgastore.com), recently named by GQ as one of the 25 best men’s stores in America, is a premier provider of sneakers and high-end menswear. Located at 6 Clearway Street in Boston’s Back Bay, Bodega was founded in 2006 by Jay, Oliver and Dan, three friends who wanted to create an accessible outlet for art and design. Since its inception, Bodega has quickly gained a global following for its exclusive stocking of limited edition sneakers and quality goods.

Known for hosting an elegant shop hidden behind a fully functioning convenience store, Bodega carries brands that are renown for their well-crafted pieces as well as their attention to innovative design. Bodega also carries its own in-store line, sold exclusively at Bodega, that is predicated on the store’s philosophy of making a first-rate product while not taking oneself too seriously.

Through Styleforum, we hope to share with our followers some insight into store happenings, whether it is a footwear collaboration or an in-store event. So no matter where you are in the world, you can still support your local Bodega.

Thanks for the comments guys, much appreciated...

We've had some new things going on in-store and online this past week- we got our first shipment of goods just in time for spring from footwear company Be Positive ...

Footwear from the creative minds of famed Italian atelier Slam Jam. Fusing traditional high-end silhouettes with clean, sport casual outsoles, Be Positive has found a special niche in the market for stylish yet extremely comfortable footwear.

The Neva Francesina adopts the classic styling of a wingtip, seen here flossing a two-tone suede upper. The sock-liner rises high on the heel for optimum fit and added comfort. Additional details include the expected brogue punching throughout, a contrast sole, and waxed laces. Made in Italy.
The Neva Francesina adopts the classic styling of a wingtip, seen here flossing a smooth black suede upper. The sock-liner rises high on the heel for optimum fit and added comfort. Additional details include the expected brogue punching throughout, a contrast sole, and waxed laces. Made in Italy.

The mid-cut chukka sports an upper primarily comprised of heavy canvas with suede starting at the middle of the shoe and continuing around the heel. Some details include contrast stitching and lacing along with roping that assists in uniting the upper and sole. Made in Italy.
The Loafer Wash is a simple slip-on that uses a weathered navy leather and suede across the upper which is bound to a textured off-white sole. The rawhide laces provide a contrast, extending through eyelets toward the silhouette's rear and comfort is added by way of the soft leather sock-liner. Made in Italy.

Mark McNairy New Amsterdam x Bodega
Featuring two pairs of Mark’s traditional Long Wings and a pair of the newly introduced Wing Saddle silhouette, this project resulted from a single meeting between our Leo Pagkaliwangan and Mr. McNairy himself. At Capsule Las Vegas 2011, the two were able to sit down to discuss the collaboration. Born from the combination of their creative minds, the end products truly bring out the tones and imagery of the quintessential Bodega aesthetic. Read more about this project here.
We've retooled his newly introduced wing saddle silhouette with a digi desert camouflage print for the main panel. Exterior body consists of pebbled leather brogue and saddle panelings offset with an extremely soft full grain leather lining, all sitting on a crispy clean white Vibram Christy outsole. Other notable details include the nickel eyelets with waxed rolled laces, traditional brogue detailing and padded leather insole finished off with the gold New Amsterdam logo. Made in England in extremely limited quantities.

Yeah man, gets pretty hectic over the weekend especially with Boston just starting to show signs of fair weather... And haha I think you hit it on the head- not even sure how to categorize those things, cowboy boot cues with braided laces and a vibram sole unit, a true hybrid.

Here's another introduction of a new brand for us this spring, J.S. Homestead.

J.S. Homestead is one of three sub-brands from Japanese label Journal Standard, with each offering a completely different design concept from the other. Showcasing carefully selected items from the past mixed with modern basics, J.S. Homestead's vintage-inspired collection is suited to the style of every modern man.

Blazer-style jacket constructed from indigo cotton "beach cloth" fabric that is designed and custom woven exclusively for J.S. Homestead in Japan's denim capital of Okayama. Staying true to J.S. Homestead's vintage inspiration, this piece is cut from the same shape and construction as those worn in the 1940's.
    • 100% cotton
    • Indigo-dyed twill taping on pockets and placket
    • Made in Japan
Traditional mountain parka constructed out of exclusive fabric treated for weather resistance.
    • 65% polyester. 35% cotton.
    • Drawstring inner skirt
    • Full zip front placket with button closure

This shawl collar cardigan from J.S. Homestead stays true to the brand's concept of faithfully reproducing vintage pieces and reinterpreting them with contemporary elements. Unique details include custom buttons on the front, as well as the incredibly soft feel of the fabric.
    • 42% acrylic. 32% cotton. 26% polyester.

Incorporated in 2009, Copenhagen-based brand Libertine-Libertine has quietly garnered a strong European following. A clothing company committed to using high quality materials and having a mature look, Libertine-Libertine nevertheless retains a playful feel that keeps its line exciting and youthful. As the Danish brand begins to bring its goods stateside, Bodega is proud to be an exclusive stockist of Libertine-Libertine’s SS12 collection.

In anticipation of its US debut, Libertine-Libertine co-founder Rasmus Bak was kind enough to sit down with us to talk about the cultures that have influenced them, the journey of an up and coming brand, and the creative process involved with a new collection.

William: For our followers who are reading of Libertine-Libertine for the first time, can you tell us a little about yourself, the other founders of the company and your various roles?
Rasmus: My name is Rasmus Bak, 32 years old, living in Copenhagen, Denmark. My partners are Pernille Schwarz & Peter M Ovesen. Pernille is the head of design. She has a background in designing for other brands. Peter was my partner in crime on the road presenting the brand and selling the product. He now handles the back-office, logistics, and the financial contacts. We do everything ourselves, from the invoicing and delivery to the packaging. It’s important for us to be hands on, so we can be flexible and prioritize. I am head of sales and communications, as well as product development.
W: Do you, or any of the other founders, have previous experiences in the fashion industry? How has your past helped to shape the brand today?
R: We do have experiences in the fashion industry, but none of which we feel to have directly inspired us to do Libertine-Libertine. We wanted to approach this project with fresh energy and eyes and have only used [our] experience to navigate, in terms of business, and to avoid the obstacles and norms we didn’t like in the industry.

BODEGA S/S 2012: Hidden in Plain View
(Words: William Yu, Images: Fiona Boyd)

The city of Boston is tinted grey. Cold and faded, the crimson bricks of 6 Clearway Street are caught in the struggle between a short winter and a premature spring. A quiet street, Clearway is home to several nondescript establishments – a brownstone apartment building, a Christian Science Reading Room, and an unassuming convenience store. In the windows of this store sit shelves of laundry detergent and toilet paper. No sign hangs outside, no welcome mat rests at the foot of the door. But every once in a while, someone walks out of the store, tightly gripping a purple plastic bag. Hanging low, the bag gently reflects the sunlight, warming the street with a soft purple glow. If you were to guess what is in the bag, you might assume Advil, Trident, maybe some Old Spice. Wrong. You would be closer guessing Nike, Barbour and Mark McNairy.

Bodega, stocked with all of your favorite rat poisons and rice cookers, is known for housing a sneaker utopia hidden behind its broken Snapple vending machine. While stocking an impressive array of limited edition feet ornaments, Bodega also carries exclusive selections from menswear brands around the world, including its own in-store line, also named Bodega. Though the line over the years has primarily consisted of small pieces, hats and t-shirt mostly, this spring presented an opportunity for the crew to share its identity with the rest of the fashion industry. Presenting the SS12 collection – a Bodega family production.
It would be foolish to think that the SS12 collection appeared overnight or even within the span of a few months. The idea of creating a complete and cohesive line has had its roots for almost as long as Bodega has been in business. “It’s been three years since we got away from just doing hats with New Era and T-shirts with local guys,” recollects co-owner Jay Gordon, who along with Dan Natola and Oliver Mak make up the triumvirate that launched Bodega in 2006. Though cut-and-sew pieces have been in their thoughts for a long time, the concept of a Spring/Summer line wasn’t fully put into motion until late last year. “There are so many people out there that want to do a line. Everybody talks about cut-and-sew and this and that, but it definitely is a process. It’s a long and difficult road. Because we didn’t come from that sort of background, the learning curve has been really sharp,” admits Dan. And for its first foray in creating a full collection, the process undoubtedly had its challenges. “We started, maybe… around last summer,” says Marvin Bynoe, one of the two Bodega designers, “We started late, [and] before you knew it we had this big responsibility to put this line out.”
    [IMG][IMG]
Fortunately for Marvin, or Marv as he’s called around the shop, he doesn’t have to carry the responsibility of designing the upcoming line on his own. Randy Price, aka Pen Griffey Jr., posts up in the front of the store with Marv to collaborate on the creative direction of the collection. Friends since their high school days attending Boston Arts Academy, Marv and Randy share a clear rapport. For example, on one slow afternoon while a track from some wannabe Boston rapper blares from the speakers, Marv and Randy quietly vibe to the music as they work. And every once in a while, a simultaneous chuckle would escape from the two acknowledging the artist’s lyrical failures. No conversation was necessary; they were both thinking the same thing. In producing the Spring/Summer line, Marv and Randy built off of this rapport to produce something that would challenge their creative minds. “[For] the spring/summer line, we’re really trying to go for taking existing pieces that we like and mix them together with other things,” says Marv, scratching his shaved head as he thought of an example. “For instance, the bomber jacket – we wanted to mix it with a varsity jacket. Just trying to do something new.” (Continue reading 'Hidden in Plain View')
