    OK, so here's the summary:

    - Pocket squares are appropriate with black tie;
    - However, they should be silk, not linen (too informal);
    - However, they should not be folded, as silk should not be folded;
    - On the other hand, they should not be puffed, as this is too informal.

    Got it. Thanks gents.

    I think the flawed premise is the "silk should not be folded" one. PoP, I would agree with you that satin should not be folded. However, one can iron a very sharp crease into a good-quality silk PS and then fold it into a 3-point configuration with ease.

    I might try to source a good-quality white or cream silk PS. Failing that, my white linen PS is ready to rock'n'roll at a moment's notice.

    Kent Wang has a really nice white silk pocket square in a subtle brocade weave (dragons and shit). It's not loud, but projects the kind of outrageous decadence that black tie almost demands in this day and age.

    Here's some more information to make the waters murkier: http://www.blacktieguide.com/Classic/Classic_Accessories.htm

    Kent Wang has one of Chinese Brocade material which looks good. I've got a silk kimono material cream square from Vanda which doesn't appear to be on their site any longer.

    Yes you could, if your Xmas theme party is 'gangsta'.

    Where's FXH?

    He really should be on standby for such matters.

    He would agree with me, even if he doesn't realise it at first.

    I sent him a pic of my fiancée. He has had to excuse himself for a minute.

    PoP, here is a picture of the best-dressed man in history, Edward VIII - not known for his wise-guy affiliations - in black tie:

    He is sporting a pocket square, which has clearly been folded.

    Care to speculate as to the material it's made from?

    Enquiring minds wish to know.

    FAIL. Mr Hilter was a smart cookie, but he was no wise guy. The Mob hated him as much as they hated the commies.

    Thanks for the link Gezza. They seem to favour a white linen pocket square for evening wear.

    Mind you, that site was probably created by a spotty fifteen-year-old living in his parents' basement. But still.
