I recently became aware of the Fairgate captoe blucher (came across a pair on eBay). When did AE stop making that awesome model? Which current model took its place? (I'm not aware of any double leather soled captoe bluchers in their current offerings.)

Now that the Fifth Ave is on sale ($245+tax) I think I have to get them. My question for you guys, go with the regular sole or dainite rubber sole?

I tend to think of the Fifth Ave as more of a dress shoe, but would like to wear it with suits and possibly dark denim jeans on casual Friday's with a blazer. Does a rubber sole take away from the dressiness of the shoe?

Note - I won't be walking to and from the office in these so I'm not too worried about the wear on the heel

I'm a big fan of the dainite myself. I don't think it takes anything away

Being new at this forum some of the abbreviations I don't completely understand. Mto I'm guessing is made to order. That being said can you get anything in a cordovan? I don't have any shell shoes and would like to add one, if you did Mto would you be able to get a rubber sole like a dainite?

Woah! That's $50 under what the seconds are going for. Anyone called the bank to see if they are reduced there, too?

As far as dainite, I think it does take away from the dressiness, but just minimally and nobody will really even know anyone. I love the dainite myself and think it's a solid idea to have a shoe for "iffy weather" wear if you don't have one already. If you are thinking vtread, that won't take away from the dressiness at all.

Now I have a pair of 5th avenues in my cart. Ugh. Trying to decide on color. Any tips? Leaning towards dark chili, dainite sole. Seems like a damn good deal.

I have all 4 color choices in one form or another but I belive my chili was just labeled chili but a dark variation of it. Unsure if the color would be the same.

Walnut Wednesday? Well, close enough... especially with the high chance of rain.
I'm loving the variation that is developing in the panels. Makes for a nice rich hue. Only my 3rd or 4th wear, so still working on breaking in the dainite soles.

Interesting comments in the university - I felt the same way myself. Couldn't put my finger on it, just not my cup of tea. @MattRiv I would not advice going down in length. Consider it an eBay learning experience - you might try going down in width next time to see. Fyi - 2nds are being decoupled, so 5th 1sts only for 245. Makes sense to sell 2nds at higher than 1sts? Probably to some MBA grad from trump university.

Sadly, the MTO program has been discontinued. I believe you can order an existing shoe model and pay an additional fee to have it produced with a sole of your choice. Call customer service and ask about ordering such a shoe.

Dark chili Fifth Aves look great. I got mine before they were available with Dainite as a stock option, so I have brown Fifth Aves in Dainite. It's a solid sole choice, even with a suit, because most people will never notice. I wouldn't wear it to court, meeting with a client, or to a wedding, but otherwise I think you're set.

Is it just personal preference or a legit reason behind not wearing dainite to formal functions like you mentioned.
