Hey guys, which last do you like better? The Vass U last or the 1966 last? I'm thinking about getting an oxblood wholecut but not sure which one. AS should be cheaper because I'm in the US.

Both are good but I do like AS' medallion much better.

You really can't go wrong with either.  A couple things to consider, though...

The Vass shoes will be handwelted while the AS shoes will be Goodyear-welted.  HW is widely considered to be the superior method of construction and you will have to decide whether that is worth the price premium over the AS shoes.

Also, the channeled soles with the beveled waists on the AS shoes are not something you will have on the Vass shoes.  I personally love the soles on those AS shoes and I think that would be enough to sway me toward them (along with the less expensive price and convenience of purchasing from Herring Shoes and not having to place an MTO through Epaulet or NMWA for Vass).

Oh, and lastly, I have to agree with DpprDr that the medallion on the AS pair is cooler :D .

I prefer the Vass last and the AS medallion.
Agree that the solework is nicer on the AS but my experience is that the Vass soles wear better than the AS do. Wear AS Moore today, and like both makers.
I am perhaps a bit biased since the Vass on the pic is mine [IMG]

So in the overall scheme of things, I like the other posters, prefer AS.

BTW, the U last looks very different to the 1966 last, and feels very different on one's feet too.

Best last is the one which fits best! Still, Herring's 1966 looks more 'modern' with a slight square toe..

The creasing on your Vass look... I don't know... a little more beat up that I would expect with normal wear. Is that just the pic/angle playing visual tricks?

You think so? They're about two years old and I think they look neither better nor worse than other shoes I have in my rotation.
    Indclude another in-wear picture.

Thanks! I think it was the angle in combo with the creasing on the medallion. Second pic looks good/normal per your two years of wear.

I have many pairs of U lasts and 2 pairs of 1966 last from Herring. I find that the heel grip on the U last is much better. The soles on the AS are also a lot stiffer at first. But then again all depends in the shape of your feet, etc etc

Whichever one you choose, however, you're going to end up with a nice pair of shoes. All the best!

Just ordered a pair of AS Moore Cherry, just one question: What belt do you guys use with this color? I find it hard to find a belt that is not way too red or way too brown! Or would a medium brown belt be fine?

I have a deep red colored belt that works with my burgundy and cherry colored shoes.
