    I think it's easy to look back at historical actors and criticize them for not having contemporary progressive views. That said, it is a stretch to attribute the open atmosphere to Luther, even though he may have contributed to it. There were a lot of other factors at work.

    You're right, I'm being too harsh on the historical actors like Luther. I am asking too much when I insist that our Christian predecessors should not have murdered, tortured and deprived people of intellectual, religious and physical freedom. These, afterall, are "contemporary progressive views."
