I think hate is a strong word, but I had a strong preference for a wider tie. I decided to give it a try. I no longer have a problem with 8cm ties.

Color and material have almost more of a visual effect on tie width than the actual measured width. I cannot tell you how many times people have held a tie and said "too bad it is not X cm", then measured it and were surprised that it was. The lining and tipping also has an effect on perceived "real estate" of the tie.

I have a couple 8cm Drakes and they are closet ornaments. Maybe I need to break them out and just wear them. That burnt orange is screaming my name.

The day I started buying ties that were less than 9cm was the day that my tie collection became so much more awesome. Ya'll are foolish!

Bust those ties out, Murl and lets see what happens!

Another thing I've noticed is that ties with large patterns look much wider. So I've started in MTM ties orders getting bolder patterned ties in 8cm and solid ties in 9cm.

It is not just what the tie measures at the widest point. I think the shape of the blade has a huge impact on appearance. Tie Your Tie makes much more of a bottle shape with the front blade which makes for a fuller look while Drake's is more standard. Without knowing, I would have guessed my TYT was much wider than my other ties based on how it looks under a jacket. Actually, it is only 8.5cm.

Quick PSA : as you guys know, we supplemented the group MTO sport coat orders with a few pieces for the rack (in order to reach the minimum cloth order actually), so there's a few Fox Brothers char blue herringbone flannel and a few Drapers blue hopsack sport coats that will hit the site soon. Just so you know, that's all we have in those.

@unbelragazzo once you get your drapers brown linen/wool/silk jacket back, take some IRL pictures, and post them please. I guarantee we will have 8 people within a week.

Well, now I'm just going to be pressing F5 all day.

Re tie width: It's not the width at the widest point, it's the width where I usually tie a knot that keeps me away from 8 cm ties. I don't like the size of the knot that I get from Drake's ties in that width. 8.5 is on the border for me. But you've got plenty of great 8.5 and 9 cm ties, so I'm not complaining!

Hmmm, I agree too narrow, but then why does this tie paired with char blue herringbone look so much fuller? Superior knot tying skills? More robust fabric? If I'm not mistaken, it's the rust donegal herringbone in the current Drake's batch (i.e. 8cm):
