Pipe Smoking

Greetings to one and all.

I don't know about you Fellows over the pond, but European pubs (sorry... bars) and restuarants and God knows where else have gone through some rather significant changes in recent years. The deadly cigarette has been condemned to the gallows..! People see smoking as anti-social and smokers are disgusting and smell, blah, blah and more blah..!

BUT... does this mean the end is nigh for the pipe smoker whose elegance and panache is to become nothing but a dishonourable vice!!!??? I ask you Gentlemen to decide...

... is the graceful, slender art of smoking a pipe something to admire or merely a disgusting habit???

Open to the forum.

I'm not one to throw stones, live and let live, all that stuff...but seriously, now. If you like it and all that, fine. But I've not seen anyone under 60 or not named MacArthur who could pull it off.

I enjoy a good corncob full of baccy after I finish the day off by slopping the hogs.

God bless Dixie.

I don't know if it is something to admire per se. Certainly it is not distasteful if done in moderation. I could see it as an admirable trait to continue doing something you genuinely enjoy despite changing social conditions.

Ive been a cigar smoker for a while, so I went down to my tobacconist about 6 months ago and talked to the resident pipe expert and told him that I wanted to get knee deep in pipe smoking. He told me to buy a cheap pipe to make sure that I liked it first. I said FUCK THAT, I picked up a nice peterson pipe, about 50 dollars (which is a lot in pipe tobacco) of tobacco, all different varieties. It just wasnt for me. I pretty much hated it. The flavor just wasn't there for me.

Dear Le Plus Britannique,

I live in Sweden and was overjoyed at the long awaited news that smoking was to be prohibited in pubs and restaurants and so on.
In fact, Sweden already had a ban on smoking in public buildings, shops etc and in the workplace. And even in certain open air venues, such as outside certain buildings, in some parks, in playgrounds and at railway and bus stations.

The only places you can smoke in Sweden are at home or in the street.

That said, as a fond walker I partake of the odd cigar and the occasional drag on a friend's pipe when out on long walks. Sometimes I also smoke from a huqqah when replete in fez.
I intend purchasing a pipe of my own soon.
I view the smoking of cigars, pipes and huqqahs as both pleasant and relaxing, and of course I never inhale, I just let the fragrant smoke roll around my mouth, and then exhale but never directly at passers by and never in the presence of the gentler sex.

I saw a guy smoking from a pipe in his car today and did a double-take.

Simply fabulous. I see you're a Gentleman of polished values and life takes its time. I'm a big fan of Avalon tobacco, which is blended with red wine (yes, yes... I tend to go weak at the knees for a good bottle of dry red). There are house-tobaccos, which I purchase locally and tickle my fancy I must admit.

I do not smoke a pipe, but thought it interesting that some smokers put a bit of scented snuff into their tobacco blends for even more aroma.

I love the pipe's humble elegance as well as the smell of its tertiary smoke.

MacArthur was a great, clever and ruthless man. But I bet you a pint of best beer that he smoked a pipe when he was a young man. I must admit though, when I'm walking down the street with my faithful pipe in my mouth and with my Stetson or Panama on my head, there are those who look at me as they walk past.

Are they admiring? Do they like what they see? Are they sub-consciously putting themselves in a similar position? Who knows.

MacArthur was a very flamboyant individual. He also used an extremely long cigarette holder whilst a student at West Point.

I like a nice aromatic in the summer. I have a modest briar pipe, but have been thinking of something more avant garde.

There are times in life when it makes sense to purchase a Mercedes Benz rather than settling for a Ford!!!

I recommend Vauen, which is a pipe manufacturer from Nuremburg in Germany. Go to www.vauen.de or look them up in Google.

@ LabelKing - many thanks for the history lesson.
