The classic video game thread

We need a thread to discuss classic games only. I have been really interested in them lately. I have an arcade close by that has a frogger, pacman, tetris and dig dug machine there. They also have about 20 pinball machines. I have also downloaded some of them for the Wii Virtual Console. Does anybody have any good strategy tips for Dig DUg?

J/K'ing. I think a Dave and Busters type place that only had classic games would make tons of money.

How are we defining classic games? I've played straight through since NES though I'm sure at this point, some would consider N64 "classic". Young whippersnappers.

I think classic should be defined 32-bit and lower. That would include Sega Saturn and Jaguar but not PSX (it wasn't true 64).

That's not to say that PSX/N64 and newer games aren't classic - Golden Eye and Metal Gear Solid are definitely classics - but they're modern classics. Like how Dumb and Dumber is a modern comedy classic and isn't quite as classic as Blazing Saddles.

One more generation of consoles and then 64 Bit games can be included into real classics. Like how oldies stations are now including early 70's music. When we're in our 50's they'll be playing Gangsta Rap.

I'm lately re-obsessed with Rush n' Attack (also known as Green Beret). That game was impossible but I loved it.

Not thread jacking, but I remember for 64 that Zelda Ocarina of time was the most amazing game of all time. I don't play vg's anymore though...

There is a Centipede game at the local laundromat that has received no maintenance in its life. The thing still takes your quarter and plays like it should after nearly 30 years of abuse. I am amazed at how well these machines have held up.

I briefly worked in the coin op game industry for the place that made 'Police Trainer'. The guy who created Q-bert used to drop by once a week and always had some stories of the golden age of arcade games.

At a local sandwich place, i own all 5 high scores on Mappy. That's pretty old school i guess (84?)

Yeah, N64 may not be classic yet, but OoT was certainly the best game ever made.

StarFox was a close second.

OoT was a little boring, definitely not in contention for best ever. The N64 game that really blew me away was Mario 64. That game was a beautiful thing.

From what I have seen it's all about location. At my work we buy games from failed arcades all the time. Yet I have heard of a bar that is filled with just classic games and they make out well.
