Im considering the $2,000 purchase for a MacBook Pro. Not sure if I should pull the trigger though.

Pros and Cons? Any owners?

1. They are the best things ever. Apple is run by God. 2. Macs are overpriced and iSheep suck. There, I just pre-empted any discussion that will ensue.

Why do you want a MacBook Pro? What are your needs? What are you expecting?

It depends on what you're using it for. If just for email, internet, word documents, storing music/photos, etc... then you don't really need a macbook and can get a much better bargain. I find a lot of people pay a lot extra for macbooks when they really don't need them but just want a mac. I will say, that there are some people who i'd really recommend one to. I also don't want to discuss the inevitable "you can build up a laptop/pc to run mac osx and programs for cheaper and better" thing because i don't think the OP cares.

I've been a PC user my whole life. I'm considering one. The first thing I'd do is format the computer and install linux though. http://www.anandtech.com/mobile/show...px?i=3439&p=13 I hate to say it, but battery life for the Apples trounces windows computers. I wish they had followed up this article by installing OSX on one of the PCs to test their theory that the OS may be at fault. I'm also looking at some of the Sony/lenovo stuff. I'm really just beginning the search for a new notebook.

Here's a tip;

It's just a fucking computer.

You type shit on it. You listen to music. You download and watch copious amounts of porn.

If a mac gets your dick hard, then buy one and sit with it in Starbucks with pride.

never thought i'd be defending apple, but...

It's pretty damning and anandtech is a good source. I would love to see how the respective notebooks do under linux though.

You pay a premium for the operating system. Whether you think it's worth it or not is the deciding factor.

I haven't owned a Windows computer since I got a Quicksilver G4 tower in 2001 or 2. OS X is efficient and trouble free, I never feel like I'm fighting against it to do anything. I could probably go back to Windows if I figured out how to strip a computer of all the bullshit manufacturers add on (media center stuff) and how to make it less flashy, but I'd rather stick to OS X.

As far as the computers themselves - they're perfectly fine. No better or worse than any other high-end laptop IMO (ie Lenovo or the like), some nice features (like the new trackpad). I'm not completely sold on the glossy screens (really, Apple, you build yourself around appealing to 'creatives' and then fuck them?) but not as opposed as I was initially.

The new keyboard is nice, though I wish the 17" had a real number pad instead of a ton of dead space.

If you're going to buy one, get the base 15", put in your own memory and a 320GB 7200RPM drive ($90 from NewEgg), don't pay Apple premiums.

I have a previous-gen MacBook that never boots to OSX.

Chop off about 1/3rd of the battery life if you plan to run Linux or XP on it instead.

this will sound asinine, but i believe you're either a mac person or you're not. hard to convince someone who is otherwise and vice versa.

I think it has something to do with lead in the water or being dropped on your head as a child.

What do you need such a expensive computer for. I have a laptop i got for less than 1000 and plays whatever I want fine.

I mean... the macbook pro has a lot of ponies behind it. 2.4ghz and 2gb or ram isnt exactly slow, but idk if it is worth $2000
