I am thinking of acquiring new socks, mostly for wear with jeans (and sometimes I imagine shorts, when I'm going for runs etc).

What I want to know is, are ankle socks still in for men's casual wear? Jag, where I used to buy them, don't make them for men any more. I can only wonder if I am missing out on something.

Help me S&D, you're my only hope.

socks are a functional clothing item, unless you're dressing for something formal.

I usually only wear ankle socks in the summer and to the gym.

I like cool socks. ime, the best quality cotton sock out there is made by a Japanese mill for MAC in SF. They were $8 last year, but are are no $24/pair. I had one pair that has stood nearly weekly wear for a year and still look decent.

Smart wool. They can be worn for several days (I go 5-6) without washing. They don't stick after several days of wear and don't stretch.

Ankle socks with anything but athletic activities in shorts is offensive to me.

Can you tell me more about the 5-6 days. The smart wool are really nice but expensive, but this may justify the costs. Is the 5-6 days walking around, what about jogging in them? I'm pretty excited about the possibilities.

Thanks.

This concept is foreign to me. Can I acquire these in the antipodes? Is smart wool a brand or a type of wool?

https://www.smartwool.com/default.cfm ... I bought several pairs on sale over the holidays from The Walking Company for casual wear. I find that a lot of wool socks, because they are moisture wicking and odor-resistant, can be worn several days before needing to be laundered. I've gone a week of camping and hiking with just three pairs of thicker wool socks -- I could have probably gone with two. :p

If your socks are showing when you are wearing jeans you're doing it wrong. If you are wearing shorts and running, you're an idiot if you're trying to look fashionable while exercising. If you're wearing shorts go sockless.

Or wear them extremely conspicuously.

^^ I'm sure LK has nothing but disdain for those traitorious dogs ----- Smart Wool / Thorlo are pretty much unbeatable from a functionality standpoint, And I'd never wear boots without them (mostly because I end up buying too small and get heel blisterse otherewise). Occassionally I'll buy a 24 pack of Gold Toe for like $10 and they will last for a few months at least before falling apart.
