Sprint Phone Unlocking

I was bored of my Blackberry, so I bought an Instinct of off ebay (Sprint's version of the Iphone), and of course I got a phone with a bad ESN
So I contested the charge with AMEx and got my money back.
Bot now I'm stuck with a phone I can't activate !
Anyone know how to unlock the ESN or know someone who knows how to - I'll pay even, the phone was free anyways
Or, does anyone wanna buy it - it's in the box with all the goodies in decent shape...

You can probably resell on ebay, stating that it's bad esn, and still get a good bunch of money.

What's wrong with the ESN? Is it reported as stolen or something? I'm a Sprint person as well and a few years ago I bought a used phone that had an ESN number registered as "Stolen" so I actually tracked down the original owner of the phone (his number was still programmed into the phone when I bought it) - I called him and explained the situation. He had no idea his old phone had even been resold. We got on a 3-way call with Sprint and straightened everything out in about an hour. If it's just defective then I would return it to a Sprint store. It's less than a year old so you should qualify for a 1yr manufactures warranty

I bought it from the original owner - it's still active on his account - I spoke with him and sprint - apparently he owes them like $800, so they cancelled him, and until he pays up, all the phones from his account are "frozen"...

ah gotcha, I guess that kinda puts you between a rock and a hard place eh? I guess Sprint thinks you might be re-activating the phone for this guy to use since his account is busted.

im going through the exact same thing right now except i paid 150 for a blackberry that i cant use because the person owes money on their account. They wont pick up my calls or answer mty messages is there anything i can do legally? sprint said i could take legal action but didnt specify

you could consider a legal action against the person who sold you the phone, if you really felt like they misrepresented the item. What whosurdadi did, by disputing with Amex is probably the only way to get any satisfaction . Sprint - which uses a technology called CDMA (also verizon, us cell, alltell, et al), locks phones to a certain carrier in a way which cannot be broken, as well as utilizing the phones ESN (think a SSN for a phone) as the sole tracking feature. This is unlike GSM phones (ATT, Tmobile) which use a different method of phone locking, instead relying on the phones SIM card as the method of tracking the account. Because of that the subsidy locks (so that you dont buy a cheaper phone on another carrier) can be broken much easier.
