What people tend to forget is that the Dungy's tenure at Tampa has a lot to do with the Bucs' winning a Super Bowl in their first year under Jon Gruden. Even Warren Sapp thinks so.

And +1 to Ambulance Chaser's posts in this thread.

Uh no.......the AFC South is a pretty strong division (excluding the 08-09 season).

Plus when he was in the NFC South, they weren't quite slacking at the time.

NOT Hall of Fame material, unless you think that being the first black coach to win a Super Bowl is an automatic qualifier. Personally, I think the sam e standards ought to govern.

Dungy also annoys me because of his holier-than-thou attitude, which I think is complete nonsense and not backed up at all by the reality of Dungy's life.

"One and Dungy." If he were a great coach, then Colts homers wouldn't have given him this nickname.
Go figure, a guy who takes time to do community service and spend time with his family=Holier than though.

Dungy is a great coach...i dont think he is the least bit overrated hes been to the playoffs the past ten years, that is fucking sick. i really dont see the point of bringing up coaching peyton because every great coach has a successful QB right beside them, they go hand in hand (no homo) My only knock on him is that he was too conservative with his offense on 4th down. I believe this directly cost them two playoff games, one against the pats and one against the chargers. Also, I think that he did an excellent job of contending with belichick over the past several years. that has become THE rivalry over the past decade. not even really close imo. those games will go down as some of the best played/coached games we have ever seen. i remember reading somewhere that hes had like 3 staffers leave indy since hes taken over. that speaks volumes in itself. he drafts great. he has put together a defense that fits the scheme perfectly. i would take the indy D with a 10 point lead over any in the league. As far as the spiritual dungy is concerned, he doesnt make a big show of it all. the media just does it for him, which probably is a bit exaggerated. but as for being overrated as a coach, hell no

TAMPA 2 ANYONE? another thing i thought was worth noting, dungys coaching tree. walsh had holmgren, fassel, dennis green, seifert all on his staff. parcells had belicheat, mangini, coughlin, sean payton, sparano. dungy has herm edwards, tomlin, lovie smith, gruden, and im pretty certain caldwell will end up being a gosu as well.

This is like debating whether or not Vince Lombardi is overrated because his QB was Bart Starr. Well, is he? I don't know that Dungy is a "legend"... but he is certainly HOF worthy, and amongst the best coaches of the modern era. I see him as sort of a modern day George Allen. Allen won 71.2 percent of his games (116-47-5) over 12 years and two teams (L.A. Rams and Washington). He coached one of the most dominant regular-season clubs in NFL history, the 1967 Rams, and was a two-time NFL Coach of the Year. In twelve years, he never had a losing season. And among coaches with 100 career victories, only Vince Lombardi (.739) and John Madden (.759) won a greater percentage of their games. Allen’s teams never got it done in the postseason. He was 2-7 in the playoffs. That 11-1-2 Rams team of 1967? The fifteenth most dominant regular season NFL football team of all time? It got routed by the 9-5 Packers, 28-7, in the first round of the playoffs. George Allen is in the HOF. Edit: On a side note, guess how many of the top 5 most dominant regular season NFL teams of all time has won a Superbowl or Championship? [answer] 1: 2007 Pats Lost Superbowl XLII 2: 1968 Baltimore Colts Lost Superbowl III 3:1999 St. Louis Rams WON Superbowl XXXIV 4: 1969 Minnesota Vikings Lost Superbowl IV 5: 1968 Cowboys Lost div. round of the playoffs.[/answer]

All i know is i saw a couple posters take credit away from dungy because they say peyton was the reason they had all the success BUT ALSO SAY dungy was the reason they underperformed in the playoffs. Can't have it both ways. Also, who said he was the best coach of all time or something? He's one of the better coaches of the past 12 years hands down. A lot of the cases some people make against him can be said about almost any really successful coaches. A lot of the stuff being said about dungy this week is about how he was a really great guy. He was without doubt one of the best coaches this decade though. Consistent success and occasional brilliance. Show me any hall of fame coach where it was vice versa throughout their career. The fact that winning 14 regular season games and losing in the divisional or conference finals in the playoffs is considering "underachieving" speaks really highly of how he was as a coach.

Turning around Tampa was huge. People forget how bad they were - "bay of pigs" anyone?

He'll definitely be HOF.

And for all his achievements he did the one thing no one ever thought could happen - he made Peyton Manning a champion.

Turning around Tampa and making a winner of Manning, that's two of Herakles 7 labors right there.
