Forbes Tie Rankings

What do you guys think of this article? Do you agree with the rankings and has anyone ever heard of the Andrew's ties place? http://www.forbes.com/collecting/200..._0526feat.html

About as accurate as their suit rankings -- they got it right on some, wildly off on others.

Four of the very best makers -- Nicky, Marinella, Drake's and Charles Hill -- don't even make the list.  Grrr.  Forbes ought to know better.  And where was Talbott?  I tend not to like their designs, but the make is at or near the top.  Certainly they are famous enough that even a Forbes editor should have heard of them.  Also, I think it's a little misleading, or confusing, or unhelpful, or something, to spotlight companies that don't make ties and are not really tie specialists.  But then again, guys like us are not really the readership that Forbes is going for.

Finally, judging from what I saw at the show, the Carlo Franco tie, purely in terms of construction, beats anything on that list.  The designs are "forward" but the make is superb.

Less, I would say. Significantly less.

It's a rather random list, it seems to me. What about, say, Drake's, Nicky, Marinella or Robert Talbott Best of Class? I can't imagine any of those being beaten by Armani. Price to value, I'd rate Ike Behar pretty high, but that probably hurts them on "cachet", I guess. Who's "Lee Allison"? EDIT: The above was written before I saw Manton's critique. Great minds, and all.

I would not disparage any other makers but even if you take the list as well known makers only and do not consider folded ties...

Robert Talbott (Best of Class) is conspicuously absent.
Marinella may be too 'niche' for such a list but they sell more ties than some of those listed, perhaps the judges are not familiar with them.

The criteria used are somewhat silly.  For example - Giorgio Armani got a very low score comparatively for weight.  Armani ties use a very, very thin lining and I believe that is intentional on their part - they want a very floppy tie.  Whether you like Armani or not is irrelevant - the criteria is rigged since Armani has the exact weight they want.

Color and style?  Wanna explain that one a little bit?

Wait a second, construction is not even one of the categories?  So... in their suit rankings was any consideration given to handsewn on canvas versus cut/glue?

Ok, in fairness I think it is probably accurate to say that their audience was not this forum.

WTF? Polo Ralph Lauren? They don't make their own ties. And if they were going to mention RL, shouldn't they have mentioned RLPL instead?

And Manton, Marinella sucks.

On a sidenote...

I once saw some tie rankings that had two brands widely seperated. Interesting because the silks in both ties came from the same Como weaver and the construction was done in the same tie shop, by the same machines/tailors.

description of andrews ties is right on the mark..they're a franchise operation with stores all over the world and have recently expanded elsewhere in europe.they have 1 store so far in u.s.a...it's company-owned on madison ave in nyc..
nice conservative patterns that make nice thick knot..worth the price at $34 & $39..but still not the same as a borelli or bizzochi that can be bought for not much more on ebay.

Speaking of which, which company now manufactures makes the Italian-made RLPL ties? Back in the old days T&A made both the RLPL shirts and ties.

good grief. what a bunch of junk. by the way, if you publish an article or ranking like this, doesn't that imply you are an expert? if so, what do you have to do to become an "expert"? can you declare yourself an expert? talk shows like dr. phil have "relationship experts" on all the time. can i call myself an expert?
