Manhattan. If the bartender makes it wrong, doff your monocle, slap them, and walk out in a huff.

Also, why are people afraid to ask bartenders what's popular, what's available, or what's the bartenders specialty? Same with asking their friends "What's good here?" or "What kind of beer to you like? I want to branch out".

Am I perhaps some kind of social genius?

I have to wonder about people recommending hard liquor (Whiskey, Bourbon) to someone who doesn't drink. Stay away from it because a)you probably won't like it b) when you drink it for the first few times you will have the same face as if someone stuck their finger up your ass. Which doesn't look all that relaxed.

Vodka is fine, but you will probably get screwed up pretty fast because you don't think you will be feeling it and all you will be tasting is the mix. You will vomit.

Stick with beer and if you don't like the taste then get bud light or stella because that is tasteless crap with low alcohol content and you can nurse it without becoming ill.

On a different note, I remember many years ago I had a biomedical class when the prof told us the best way to get our dates drunk was something mixed with a soda because the CO2 was the only thing that could transport the alcohol through the rugae directly into the bloodstream, resulting in a drunk date very quickly. Can someone refute this? I avoid mixed drinks because of this, but he was lead out in handcuffs a couple of weeks after I finished his course so I always wondered if he was just insane.

At random bars I stick to: Beer (Blue moon, Bass, Newcastle, Amstel, etc. pretty straight forward choices), vodka tonics, rum & coke, whiskey & coke.

At good bars I try better beers (either something from above or something else like Allagash), old fashioneds, vodka tonic.

When it comes to beer, the best thing to do is over a few weeks try some better beers and see what you get a taste for. Not everyone is interested about trying really obscure stuff and that's fine, but get an idea of what you think could be your go to drinks while out.

Actually it will take more than a few weeks to do so (I've had 6+ years to work on this) but the above is a decent starter.

I'm going to second the no Stella remark. I also agree that Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is a very good cheaper beer. If you need really cheap beer get Miller High Life. It sucks, but it's better than any of the other cheap beers. People who are beer lovers won't kill you for drinking it. If you find you like beer, I highly recommend trying Belgian Trappist beers. Trappistes Rochefort is the best, imo, but very hard to come by at regular bars. Chimay is a very popular trappist beer which is fantastic also. For a mixed drink I would also second Gin and Tonic. It is classy and simple. The Vodka Martini is rather popular and thought to be sophisticated (James Bond) but for someone like you I wouldn't recommend it. I find them hard to drink. Also vodka takes a bit of time to affect you, so you can get way too drunk without knowing it at first. I like good Scotch and Irish Whiskeys. Ask for it on the rocks. Those are very classy drinks. Jameson is an alright brand of Irish Whiskey. I find Bourbon hard to drink unless you're used to it. I'm not a big fan of Vodka either. Tequila can taste nice, but it's not the most sophisticated drink, unless it's the top shelf brands which shouldn't be slammed or taken with salt/lime. Most people equate tequila drinking with people getting drunk off their ass.

If you're only a light/social drinker whiskey and bourbon are not really the place to start. Since you're drinking only moderately, try and limit yourself to two-ish drinks even if you feel fine (vodka in particular has a way of sneaking up on you) and intersperse with a plain Coke/Orange Juice/Soda water and lime/Cranberry juice. This way you can keep up the social niceties without the awkwardness of nursing the same drink for 2 hours. If you do decide to indulge more, try and drink a decent amount of water: the fastest way to an annoying headache the next day is to get dehydrated. As for cheap versus expensive vodkas, I prefer the 5 or 5+ filtered types for one reason: I don't feel them the next morning like I do the cheap ones.

High Life is alright, but I'd say far and away the best cheap beer is Yuengling. I'd also prefer PBR to high life, although it has a bunch of hipster connotations these days.

I wouldn't be so quick to think this. I had a friend who was straight edge and broke and he found himself enjoying whiskey before other liquors. Yes, I'd agree that for your first drink having a shot of Old Crow probably isn't the best idea... but if we are talking about someone who has had drinks before and is experimenting, having a bourbon and ginnger, a whisky and coke or something along those lines is completely cool.

In fact, I'd bet plenty of first time drinkers would prefer one of those two to a Gin and Tonic or a Martini, two drinks people keep recommending in here (mainly due to the soda factor though...)

I can't confirm or deny the CO2 specifically, but it seems sweetened sodas seem to cause faster and a different kind of buzz. Perhaps some double blind experimentation is in order to see if there is a discernible difference between sweet, carbonated, or a combination of the two leading to faster drunkenness. Anybody know a hematologist?

Oh! I nearly forgot - as an addendum to my last post, do not drink outside your weight. I know it's really easy to drink a lot. I really do. I tend to drink my drinks faster than anyone else, and as a result I tend to drink more (when I am drinking, which is not horribly often).

If you do not have a tolerance, and you may not, you will get drunk and make a fool out of yourself. Worse, you will then proceed to vomit drunkenly, which is one of the worst experiences possible (for yourself and your friends, who will have to hold your head out of your own vomit, because you won't be able to support it yourself).

I recommend only ordering alcohol when others do, and to drink slowly. At maximum drink one beer every half an hour. When you start to feel a bit lightheaded, or tipsy, you should stop drinking until the feeling fades. Remember that you continue to absorb alcohol half an hour after your last drink, so if you stop drinking while completely drunk, chances are high that you'll end up hugging your porcelain god.

Dude, are you being sensible about drinking? Wot?!? We don't do that here. See Exhibit A:
