A pleated formal shirt and a black bow tie would help a lot.

Not for that outfit. It'd just look a little wierd - a blend of modern and traditional that just doesn't go.

Yes, if I was going to go for a bow tie and formal shirt I would go for the Pal Z. tuxedo, as described in this thread

I like the color combo, but the tie is a little bit thin for my tastes, although it's not too visible in the picture.

The photo is dark but a single button shawl collar jacket is not something I would call modern. When the jacket is short, black and worn in the evening, a long tie is a sartorial malapropism. Will
