Why are SA's so stuck up?

If you go into higher end designer stores..hell I wouldn't really qualify the places we visit in Styleforum extremely high end, you get a lot of stuck up sales associates, people working the store, etc. What makes them think they can be so damn stuck up? I think it's because you're in their territory and they expect to be able to condescend to you - they are there to advise you because they are knowledgeable or whatever. Or at least, I imagine that's how they see it.

I find that looking them in the eye and having a firm handshake dispels their superior attitude. Tell them you have an idea of what they want, but also respect their abilities and ask for their opinion on something small (then ignore it if you don't like it). that way their bloated ego is satisfied, but they are also made aware that they are there to serve you - or, like CC Babcock once said on the nanny, "You're the butler... Now buttle!"

It just happens when you work with the public. Half of the public is fine, but the other half are jackasses and unbelievably stupid. It just jades you after a while until you work your way into a better job where you can forget that you ever were in those shoes, and start treating them like crap to make yourself feel better.

Perhaps they're stuck up because they lack the intelligence, class and sophistication that comes from having taken an extremly tough AP Euro class during highschool.

If you're ugly and dress like **** chances are you're wasting their time. And I bet they're pretty accurate the majority of the time.

Two questions. A) Have you ever said that; and B) Did it work? There are some great looking girls that work for high-end designers.

I have had some very positive experiences dressed like a total schlub with SAs in high-end places.

However, I generally like SAs to leave me alone, and I'll come to them if I have a question. What's with people who need SAs in the first place? You can't figure out whether you like a sweater or not? You're too good to look through the pile of sweaters yourself to see if they have any Mediums - you need someone to look for you?

I feel the same way about waitstaff. Have you ever been to one of those, "My name is Bob, and I'll be your server today" places? A) I don't give a **** what your name is, and B) the fact that you are coming over to my table and handing me menus pretty much clued me in as to what your role is tonight. You don't have to announce it. A "My name is Bob, and I'll be your server today" place invariably follows up with repeated, "How is everything tonight? Are you enjoying your chicken?" to which I have to bite my tongue to prevent myself from saying, "It would be a lot better if you didn't come over asking me every 5 minutes how I was doing. If I need something, I'll let you know."

If I walk into a store or restaurant and nobody greets me I usually leave. It says to me that they don't want me there, and I don't want to inconvenience them.

I like to know my server's name in case I need to grab a busser or someone else to get him to come to my table. 'Sir, could you tell Bob to bring us the check? Thank you.'

The 'I'll be your server tonight' clause is a formality.
