Have you been to the Red Hook Fairway yet? It's worth the trip from almost anywhere in the city to avoid the UWS store, although, for you, Harlem may be more convenient. Zabar's gives me the willies.....

Based out of Rochester, NY I think they reach as far down as Pennsylvania or Maryland now.

When I was living in Albany, I was pissed that there were no Wegmans around and I was forced to shop at stores like Price Chopper or Hannaford (those two near me were both terrible stores). Grocery shopping should be enjoyable, in a warm and well-decorated atmosphere with helpful staff and great product selection.

Yeah, Wegmans has possibly the best grocery shopping experience.

I don't know, there are a some grocery stores a few rungs lower, e.g. Food Lion, Shoppers Food Warehouse, Mars, etc.

Are any of you old enough to remember the "warehouse" markets in which customers actually had to write the price on each item while shopping? I recall they'd have supplies of black grease pencils positioned around the store.

I agree UWS Fairway is awful when crowded (although tremendously fun if you have time to spare and can people-watch while you shop), but if you go on off-hours (early before work -- they open at 6 am, IIRC -- or late in the evening -- after 9 pm or so), it's actually quite pleasant.

Not a grocery store, but hilarious none the less. I live about 20 minutes away from this place.

Also Pubelicks (Publix) and Cum & Go gas staions are very strange.
