Help. I don't understand fashion. (primarily my hair)

I have no sense of style, work for just above minimum wage (7.66/hr) and live on my own. For the past oh... fifteen years I've dressed in blue-jeans and t-shirts, and gotten one of two hair cuts.

1. Regular gentleman's, Basically I come out looking brisk and ready for kindergaten.
2. I shave it at home with a cheap pair of clippers and look like a maniac.

How do I find the happy middle ground?

Can I dress fashionably when I have just over $80 spare a month(that's after food, rent, and various other bills)

I stand 5'9" and weigh 225(on the decline) my hair is very thick, dark brown, and grows into a mushroom/poof ball shape.

a comb is not an option, they just get bogged down, I use a brush, most of the time I part it just above the outside of my left eye, I have in the past taken it straight back.

any attempt made to brush it down from center only yields heartache when it starts curling up and or into my ears.

What is an age appropriate, business style haircut?

I work in a hospital so I want this to be somewhat professional while easy to maintain.

Thank you for any help.

Let it grow and comb it to one side. Lose weight.

It's entirely possible to look good on a budget.

Weight loss just takes time and effort, basic theory for everything.

as for letting the hair grow, I think my last haircut was four-six months back.

What am I trying to achieve by letting it grow and combing to one side? How long should I let it grow(length or time?)

I'm honestly in the dark here. I just woke up and looked in my closet and thought about how I dress and how I groom and realized that I don't like it.

But I haven't even got the basic concept of what does look good because I just didn't care until this morning.

This is probably the best advice I got. It sounds harsh but when you shed pounds pretty much anything looks better on you. I'm not talking stick thin, either. Manorexia is horrible.

But weight loss doesn't cost any money. Bonus.

All the more reason to wait until you take more off. Clothes cost money and if you're losing weight then they won't fit in a short time anyway.

Go to the Gap and buy one decent pair of dark jeans that are on sale. Go to J Crew and buy one decent shirt that fits and is on sale. It should come out to about 45 USD altogether. Then don't buy anything else until you know what you want. It sounds like we've got the same kind of hair. Lately I've been cutting it pretty short with clippers and then blending the sides a little with scissors. I do this in my bathroom with some strategically placed mirrors. It costs me 0 dollars.Seen here. I've also left it longer, put a bunch of wax in it, and wore a hat for a couple hours until it flattened out. When I was done, it still kind of looked like I was wearing a hat. Seen here. (Not really that long at the time of this picture)

How serious about are you about losing weight? If you're doing it at a decent pace, hold off on buying new clothes until you're comfortable where you are or relaly need to since you're on a limited budget.
