Noob question: why no mention of Norah Jones yet? Not obscure enough?

Norah Jones isn't jazz, at least not IMO.

Jason Moran, Brian Blade, Larry Grenadier, Brad Mehldau, Jean Michel-Pilc, Bill Charlap, Taylor Eigsti, Julian Lage, and possibly greatest of those named, Danilo Perez... who is a god.

Medeski, Martin and Wood + Tord Gustavsen Trio both make my pants fit that little bit tighter

I'm glad you went this way with it, because I completely agree with the premise. I think your conclusion is wrong, but understan what you mean.

Popular music in the west has been mainly African American created, then adopted by white folks when a new trend is needed to make a profit. That all may be true, but it doesn't mean the art form, or even lifestyle, is then dead. Blues isn't dead. Rock n roll isn't dead. R n B isn't dead....you get my point.

Especially with jazz....it has always been way more of collaberative community based form.

Punk isn't dead either

Roy Hargrove is definitely one of my favorite Trumpeters right now. He knows how to build a solo and has one of the most distinctive tones on the trumpet. Not as unique as Terence Blanchard but definitely unique non the less. Has anybody seen him live? Holy shit does he get high.

A note about Chris Potter: I was just listening to a Steely Dan bootleg from 1993, and Walter Becker was introducing the band. All of a sudden..."On sax, Chris Potter!" Neat. Steely Dan also toured with Cornelius Bumpus back then. What a stellar pairing of sax masters.

Roy is hot. Saw Roy last summer at the Detroit Jazz Festival and recently at Chicago's Jazz Showcase. If you get a chance, listen to Sean Jones.

Michael Brecker was phenomenal. Too soon gone

I thought you said "young and coming up"? Brecker was almost 60
No age limit, then try Kenny Garrett
