I was talking to my wife the other day, and she mentioned that she doesn't think that my son has really ever seen me excersize -he sees me go off to the gym or the dojo, and come back, and sometimes I take him and then leave him at childcare and work out, but he has never seen me actually excersize (she says, I am not sure, but I couldn't think of any counter examples). the games that I have gotten my son into really aren't my strong side - so I have taken him out to throw a baseball or kick around a soccer ball, but I'm not really very good at either.

to remedy this, I am signing up for judo with my son, not something that I really am excited about, but I thought that judo would be good for him, and it is a class that has adults and kids, so I thought that I would do it too. judo is the last martial art that I wanted to take, because I dont really want to spend the evening falling down and being thrown, at my age, but such is life.

I also think that I will let him hang out with my in the gym once or twice, and maybe even take him to my krav dojo.

what do you guys do with your kids?

Hey hey hey, Judo is perfect for old folks. If the Grand Sith Lord Putin is into it, sign me up!

It's actually sort of real to me - I'm thinking of going back to martial arts and doing judo or jiujitsu - I basically want something interesting that I can practice till I'm 70, and as much as I love MT/BJJ/MMA, I just don't think it will do my body good for a prolonged period of time now that I'm getting older.

Not to be a wise-ass, but what happened to kids just spending all their free time outside playing sports with other kids? That was my childhood...

Not that it made me a tough guy or anything.

i coach baseball and basketball for my oldest, soccer for my middle son. we do push ups together. they know i go to the gym all the time and want to know when they can start lifting.

we ride our bikes together. we swim indoors together throughout the winter. play wiffle ball and football as a family. and basketball.

they are limited to 1.5 hrs of either tv or video games each day, unless it's brutally cold out.

i also let them take turns injecting me with deca-durabolin-just kidding.

At least once a week I go cycling with my kid and also throw a baseball or kick a soccerball around. I was just talking to him about joining me for a morning run and he seems into the idea so we may start doing that in the next few weeks.

do you have kids? serious question - it just seems like kids don't play outdoors at all anymore, at least not alone. I miss that too, but you never see kids under maybe 10 outdoors without an adult any more. and you never see a pickup game of anything, anymore, either.

we play pickup at the local park. but even in suburbia, we rarely let the kids beyond the backyard unattended. if it's over 40 degrees, they play outside with my wife after finishing their homework every day.

that's cool, I wanted to see your answer, actually.

my son is limited to an hour of tv too, and only allowed computer games on saturdays. when you swim with your kids, is it basically playing in the water, or laps? we go to the pullpretty much once a week as a family, too, I didn't really think of that.

my 9-yo does laps with me and the wife. the 6 and 4 are not that comfortable in the water yet, so we take turns chasing them or playing marco polo in the shallow end.

it's a bit tough because my oldest is as athletic a child as you will find. good at bball, baseball, plays pickup soccer with kids from a travel team and smokes them even though he seldom plays. he rode a 2 wheeler w/out training wheels after like 3 minutes. ditto ice skates.

my 4 year old is somewhat athletic and my 6 year old is really into music (guitar/piano/drums) and not athletic in the slightest so he has a hard time keeping up.

I don't have kids yet, no. It's really a shame that they don't play outside anymore - I'm only 24 and even during my (recent) childhood (ages 7-15), all I'd do after school and in the summers was play outside. Going to the pool, pickup games of baseball (a la Sandlot), football, soccer, TONS of pick-up Bball, other assorted games like Pickle/Spud, Wiffleball. Man, that was the life for sure.

Being a kid must suck today.

I don't think that the changes are good, but who knows? when I was my son's age, I'd walk home alone, maybe a mile, and make myself lunch (usually grilling a hotdog on a frying pan). and then go outside and play until my parents came home from work. my son has never walked anywhere alone, and has never been at home alone, and has never touched the stove.

^yeah, not better. we are all sheltering our kids too much. no disrespect, but the coddling we all seem to do is why i have 22-25 year olds i've hired with no work ethic and no understanding of how life works.

believe me, I agree with you 100% but I dont have the balls to be the first father on the block to send my kid out alone. I have serously thought about it, though.
