Living in a nice area is . . . well, nicer.

It's also just been renovated throughout and is priced rock bottom as part of a state-funded program trying to revitalize home ownership in certain Syracuse city neighborhoods.

The downside is that it's in a very questionable neighborhood. Nobody's house on the street is boarded up or has trash on the front lawn (though a block in either direction there are) but there are plenty of shootings and the occasional murder, drive by, home invasion or armed store robbery in that general area of the city. Granted, I'm guessing a lot of this has to do with drugs, gangs or both - but nonetheless it's unsettling.

How many of you would opt for paying more for a crappier, smaller house or even settle for an apartment in a better neighborhood over a beautiful and affordable house in a shady neighborhood?

I passed on a house just like you were saying. It was beautiful, up on a hill, wonderful view of the city, giant open kitchen, etc... It was too big for me, but, it was in a not so nice neighborhood, and overlooked a shoping center on one side.

location location location.

then again, you could be in on the ground floor of a hot new area, thats something you need to consider

I still wouldn't advise it; let some other dude be the loss leader.

Depends on how bad the neighborhood is,if it is bad you say then probaly a no. If the neighborhood is borderline bad I'd take the nicer house, send my kids to private school with the money I save ,as I plan to no matter what neighborhood I live in.

White folks are getting braver these days it seems. In Keney Park on the north end of Hartford I've seen white guys playing Rugby and even some older folks walking their dogs lately, something I've never imagined happening. To be honest I'm not completely sure how I feel about it.
