I lived in Edmonton for 6 years at one point, for uni. First lived in Oliver, which I really liked, but moved just south of Whyte (78th) to be closer to friends. Haven't been back for a while. I didn't really like that neighbourhood then ('90s) and I guess it's gotten a lot worse now.

Are the Strath and Commercial still around?

The Strat is still there. Scuzzy as ever. I find that it's the hangout for emos and skaters now. Not sure about Commerical. I don't think so but I could be wrong.

What's Hanson's?

Hanson's Fishing Outfitters; Pendelton shirts and just about anything from the full Filson catalog there. Bags, tin cloth clothing, traditional mackinaws, and pretty much anything else they offer, within a week if it's not in stock. Traditional workwear aplenty. If you're into that kind of stuff, this place is like finding gold in a pan of mud.

That's kind of the thing about shopping in the hinterlands; you find some of the coolest stuff at the most unexpected places.

For example, O'Connors stocks, or at least can get, some really cool Barbour jackets. The slimmer ones specifically, which is nice, since traditional Barbour fits me like a tent.

Strat is still alive and well...ok, I don't think its ever been "well". But yeah, its there, packed with hipsters and the few relic derelict drunks. The pitchers are now up to like, $9.00 (if I remember correctly), absolute madness.

Commercial, is still there, more or less, although I believe it has fallen somewhat out of favor. Not really a spot I would find myself in normally.

So, anyone going to the Oiler game Sunday?

Hey guys, thought id check in here. Im neew here, and from Calgary. I am in the army reserves, and have done two tours to Afghanistan, so have spent several years training in Edmonton. Just thought id say hi, as everyone posting here is from my neck of the woods.

I was originally born in Edmonton, and now I'm living and going to school in Calgary. Good to see people on here from the Alberta region.

No worries man. I am happy that there are like minded people living in the Calgary/Edmonton area. I am the most stylish of my circle of friends, and dont feel that I am that stylish!

I have already learned a lot from the forum. I am planning on checking out the Edmonton gravity pope next time I am up, and found out about a nice tailor shop in Calgary that does custom suits!

Speaking of which, I guess I should weigh in on recent sales.

Harry Rosen (West Ed) -- A few sales going on here. 60% off a fair amount of merchandise, including:

• some nice ties (RT best in class, etc.)
  
• a lot of J.P. Tilford for Harry Rosen shirts (especially in sizes 16/16.5)
  
• scarves, gloves, hats

There are some higher end shirts (e.g. Canali, Zegna, Facconable) for about 30% off, which makes them still quite expensive. In addition, some suits are discounted by about 30-40%. There is a nice Samuelsohn 3b in solid navy that is around $550 at the moment. Pyjamas and bedtime clothing was on sale as well, but I didn't have a close look. Finally, there are a number of shoes on sale for about $100 off. Some Allen Edmonds, Cole Haan, Hugo Boss for around $250 each. Sizes were limited. There was also a table of pants which seemed to be about half off.

At the same time, they seem to be running a simultaneous sale on all their house brand white shirts, which are priced at $75 each.

Now, there's still a great deal of 'sports wear' on the tables, which is marked down by an additional 25% on top of the current sale price. After a brief glance, it appeared that you could get some fairly nice deals, e.g. Cashmere v-necks for $60 or so.

A final note. I've been there twice in the last two weeks and it looked like almost no inventory had moved. I hope that this means there will be further reductions in price, but they might just send whatever doesn't sell to their Ontario outlet stores instead. Unfortunate, as I still consider the sale prices to be just too high.

Henry Singer (Manulife Place) -- the dirty shirt sale just began. I have to say it is disappointing overall.

Winter coats are selling for about $550. There is a massive table of Hugo Boss shirts; one for $119 or two for $199. Ties (mostly awful selection, but some nice brands) are on for $68 each, while sundry sweaters, t-shirts, gloves, hats, scarves, etc. are discounted (not sure by how much). Didn't see whether there were any suits and or sport coats on sale. There were mid-range (Boss, Haan) shoes for around $250 each.

Holt Renfrew (Manulife Place) -- the now or never sale just began, as well.

Very large selection of ties on sale, some good selection, but not especially cheap iirc (around $60 each?). Sundry brand-name pocket squares (RL, Paul Smith, Zegna) on sale for between $30 and $45. There is a decent collection of shirts for about 50-60% off, including Armani, Burberry, Paul Smith, and Boss, but at prices which ranged between $100 and $150 each, I didn't bite.

There were 3-4 racks of suits and sport coats marked down by about 60-70%, but it was fairly unimpressive stuff for the price. Armani jacket for $800, Paul Smith for slightly less. Notice the same 2-3 brands keep popping up? Pretty annoying.

There were also some shoes on sale but I didn't get a good look at prices or models. Didn't look at streetwear/denim, but there was plenty of that on sale too.

Overally, pretty disappointing, especially after having spent months on the B&S forum. Every time I picked up an item, I mentally checked it against every deal I've ever seen on this website and ended up turning it down.

Thanks for the heads up sir. I'll have to make a stop into WEM to check HR. I can't usually bring myself to walk into Holt, but I'll definitely head downtown and check out Singer. I always find the people there to be head and shoulders above Holt.
