Keys!!!! I've always been a big fan even with her first album. I loved the 2nd album video for "You don't know my name" with Mos Def in it. Beyonce's vocals or "chops" are just not solid. You can tell she's probably had absolutely no voice training prior to becoming famous with DChild. But then again not everyone's going to sound like Angie Stone. I think I like Keys most of all because of her musical ability. She can actually play instruments! If all you have to do is sing then there shouldn't be any reason why you're not a student of learning how to better your chops!

While Beyonce's recently dropped album was not too impressive.

Mary J is always a good choice. I give mad respect to Jennifer Hudson & it sucks what happened to her family! What do you all think about Keisha Cole? Okay, okay take away that horrid yet sometimes comical MTV reality show about her family. I personally think she is the heir to Mary J. She has that naturally slightly raspy voice, has very good range & her production is probably more 60/40 slanted to Hip Hop beats but has nice ballads as well.

I agree with you take on Keisha Cole, she positioned herself there better than Ashanti could back when The Inc was trying that whole Princess of R&B thing. I saw her show once and to be honest it has kind of biased me against her.

But luckily Ashanti is still young enough to bounce back & I like the single "The Way I Love You" unfortunately I'm not feeling the rest of the album.

Hey isn't Sade due for another album here? She tends to go about 8yrs between albums doesn't she?

I particularly like John Legend as well, even though his last album wasn't as good as his first two, it was still decent to good and worth a good listen.

Just to mention a few current R&B artists:
Rihanna has had catchy songs but they are more pop than anything else I think.
Jamie Foxx has had a disappointing album with Intuition, some good songs here and there but not worth getting the whole CD.
Usher's last album had a few decent songs but it didn't really compare to Confessions and I think he ahs a new album due out this year as well.
For a more upbeat R&B album, both of Chris Browns albums have been pretty good.
He is not really mainstream in the U.S. anymore but I also like Craig David and hopefully he plans to release a new album this year.

That's all I could think of for now for the mainstream artists.

Rihanna & Chris Brown are definitely more Pop oriented & are doing it very well. I think either could go true R&B if they took it seriously enough. Maybe after they have their fun & make the dough they'll come back to R&B.

I've never been a huge John Legend fan & the funny thing about it is I can't place my finger on why? Maybe it's his monotone voice. But I respect his craft.

Jamie Foxx's first album with "Peep This Out" was an underground hit & I loved it. But this album he strayed in my opinion & tried to satisfy the younger crowd & he ain't all that young himself.

I like Craig David but he definitely floats more Pop. I don't see a lot of the British artists really impress me much. Either they try to hard to be old school soul or they're more pop. I mean I like Leona Lewis because she has range but her songs are leaning pop.

OK - I just saw Rafael Saadiq on Leno and was quite impressed.

Sounds like vintage Motown R&B to me.

I may have to pick up the album.
