I think in general, the Food Network is viewed as a net positive, because as you mentioned it brings more attention to food for the regular person. The more people get interested in food, the better it is for us and the industry. Although, obviously, they'll take exception and be upset anytime misinformation is spread---which is pretty often if you watch the Food Network. Now, on the food media totem pole, Food Network probably isn't very high, because of the market it is geared to (regular, at home cooks) compared to say,
Cook's Illustrated or
Food and Wine which are more geared toward hardcore foodies and professionals.
