Classic cocktails making a comeback - Page 4

^^^ There was a place in North Beach in the early 90s (I am sure it is still there,) which was one of the few places open on Monday nights. In those days I worked at a restaurant that was closed Sunday and Monday, so those two nights were big for me. Anyway, this place was the only open place with a large selection of ABWs (aging bar whores, now known as MILFs) and it was a real dive. Everything they made was disgusting, with the exception of their Negronis, which were great. They couldn't even pour a good beer. So, with the combination of ABWs and openness, I ended up drinking a lot of Negronis for about a sixth month period, and always figured them to be a dive bar drink. It is funny to me to see them as a popular, and even revered, cocktail, though I still do like them a lot.

Who knows. I was in Koln, and with that amazing (and kind of scary looking) cathedral there, it just seemed like the right place to venture into a tiny liquor shop in a basement along a cobblestone alley and buy some absinthe. Definitely worth doing, but I wish I had a better story about my post absinthe adventures. Passing out and waking up in the same position 12 hours later just isn't the stuff you can write a book about.
