Hamilton, Seiko, Tissot, are all good ideas in that price range. I might also recommend a Poljot (manual-winding Russian made watches), or perhaps a Citizen. All of these brands have their supporters and offer a lot of different styles. Really it depends upon your personal style, your wrist size, what you will be using the watch for, whether you prefer bracelet styles or leather straps, etc.

I have a Seiko Kinetic that I think does a pretty good job of straddling the business-to-casual line, and I also have an Invicta diver-style watch that I have found to be a decent piece for the money. Neither should be confused with a Rolex, or even a Tag or an Omega. If you have patience and a steady income, you might want to hold off awhile, scrape up a few more bucks and take a look at some vintage watches.

One more word on wrist size: please buy something that looks like it fits on the end of your arm. Big guys need big watches, and smaller guys need smaller watches. Just a pet peeve of mine. Good luck with your search.

(lisapop @ Mar. 18 2005,08:52) You can't go wrong with the Seiko Black Monster, which I own. I go back and forth debating the merit of costlier watches (a potential WIS), but I keep reverting back to a friend's summation of all watches as basically clever gadgets. All the more disposable funds for clothes. http://www.watcharama.com/skc017.htm Grayson
I am somewhat flabbergasted, for a WIS (and I don't claim to be one), wearing a Seiko monster with a suit (regardless of brand or make) is like wearing Converse High tops with a suit from Raphael. To be honest, when I walk the street here in NY, I first look at the watch, then the shoes, and finally the suit. I have seen so many well dress men with pathetic watches. This is where the Milanese style discussed lately makes the difference from trad or Savile Row, these guys know the importance of a decent watch. As to recommend a watch in a $200 range, the Hamilton Khaki on a strap is about that price, on steel bracelet a bit more. The Seiko Monster looks good only with a diving suit. William Massena
What are you talking about? Listen, buddy, you are a WIS, whether you like it or not. Jon.

Two questions relating to the Seiko monster:

1. Opinions on the chrono version (black face)?

2. At that price point, is there any real danger that one of the examples on ebay is a fake?

I wasn't aware that there was a chronograph version of the black or orange monster, there may be one of the 200m diver though. As far as fakes, I wouldn't worry about it too much, but if you are really concerned, you can buy it at the link below for about $20 more than ebay. http://www.amazon.com/exec....=glance I got mine on ebay from "watches59" and had no issues.

Dorian, WIS stands for Watch Idiot Savant, it was a "title"i nvented by Richard Paige in 1997. At the time Paige was the owner of Timezone. He created a pin and gave it as a token of appreciation to major article contributors to the site,  a few contributors received the token badge and were called the original WIS. Among them was Walt Odets (the son of the Author), Peter Chong (who post here on occassion), Offshore Observer (also here rarely) a few more  including humble me. The term somewhat spread among watch collectors and today most people who have some interest in watches are called WIS. However only a few have the original pin. Voila, William

I purchased my Seiko Blk Monster on Amazon with credits accrued from using my amazon Visa card, so it was a no-brainer. I will say this about a more conspicuous, WIS-worthy purchase I made some years ago in the form of a Rolex Submariner: It's the only brand of watch I know of that retains most, if not all, of its value. I owned it for 10 years, during which time it worked faithfully, and I sold it for pretty much the same price I paid for it. As watches go, a very nice investment.

Bif name like Patek, Vacheron or AP remain their value.

In 10 year you could sell them more than you paid them because of the steadily increase of prices.

And because of the Sterns' strategy of keeping those prices high, in general, by purchasing their own watches at auction and purposely paying inflated prices for them.

But then you are bring opportunity cost into consideration if you pay >10k USD for a watch. Maybe the money can be invested elsewhere and gain a higher return.

This is not an investment. This is a pleasure which allows you too get back your money if you need it (not like clothes, cars or restaurants.)

I've worn a solid gold Rolex OQ for years, but have always been a little sheepish about doing so. I finally talked my wife into buying me a new watch this past Christmas. Actually I picked it out and she helped me wrap it. It's a Citizen Eco Drive that I absolutely love. Once it is charged, it "never" needs anything more than exposure to day- or office light. It is lightweight and suprisingly elegant. I get a lot of compliments on it. (Of course, these compliments are coming from fellow North Dakota rubes, so must consider the source.) And best of all, one can buy a really nice watch quite cheaply. They regularly trade new in box on eBay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws....hosting
