Canon G10 thoughts?

Debating on whether I want to purchase a G10 soon as a more portable alternative to my DSLR.

Anybody own one, have any thoughts/ sample pictures/ comments on picture quality/ criticisms?

I read the reviews and all the professional reviews think its a pretty good camera but I just wanted to see what everyone else had to say.

It looks pretty.


But personally, I'd opt for a portable DSLR combo like Olympus E-420 w/ pancake lens.

I have been totally drooling over this. I really wish it had IS though. I know the E-5xx is going to have it, but the small body is sweet!

Love my G9, can't wait to buy the G10. I don't even use a DSLR or video camera anymore. Take my G9 everywhere. Can't beat it for the price or size. A perfect small camera.

it's somewhat meh in low light, it's fine but grainy, but I think the G10 is better. Just buy it, I have a lot of friends that are pro photographers and they all swear by it. I do too. I use it for web pics and vids no problem.

I'd go for something smaller like the Panasonic LX3, both received excellent reviews.

Ken Rockwell recommends the Canon SD880 IS:

I always have a compact camera in my pocket to catch whatever happens around me. I use compact cameras for scenic photos, travel and landscapes, which hold still.

As of November 2008, my very favorite compact camera at any price is the $260 Canon SD880.

Not that he dislikes the G10:

My photographer father loves his G9/G10 (probably a 9 but he may have upgraded).

Upgraded from the 7 for raw files and seems to use it all the time instead of trying to have an SLR (I'm referring only to non-work situations here like vacation and event photography).

The bit I have used it, it seemed like a great camera. Lots of features, great photos, and a pretty compact form.

I thought the E-520 was the one that had it and it was slightly bigger. I have been thinking either that, the Panasonic G1, or the Sigma DP2 when it comes out. I don't know much about cameras but I want something small that gets me nice pics since the camera I have now is so old.

other options that are more portable:

a rangefinder

or the leica d-lux 4 which takes pretty damn nice pictures

there are a few differences but probably not really worth the price difference

but yea essentially its the same camera
