Where to live in San Francisco?

I'm looking for something ideal for a soon to be struggling grad student. somewhere fun, safe, affordable, 20somethings, etc...

Also...where NOT to live? I hear Hunters point is a NO.

I live in Dogpatch, the T-Line is right out front of my door. It's gritty and industrial. I like it. Reminds me of downtown LA in the early 1990s. Most of San Francisco sucks to live in, in my opinion, but I like Potrero Hill a lot. It's sunny, there is parking and the people are (somewhat) bearable. When I went to state, I lived in the Panhandle and Lower Haight. I liked that too, but I was a kid, so what did I really know. Matt are you making SF meet up dinners?

I suggest the Tenderloin--good people watching and proximity to all the high-end shops.

If your attending SF State, I suggest the Sunset district. It's close to school, in a residential neighborhood which feels outside of the city (being in the city), and is safer than the Mission, Hunter's Point, the Fillmore, and Excelsior districts. SF is an awesome city!

Who in God's name would suggest living in the Tenderloin? Even Dave Chapelle said that place sucks. I really don't think the Mission is that bad. You have pretty good places to eat, good art, and it's reasonably close to most of the good stuff. I personally would recommend Hayes Valley. It's definitely a pretty nice place to be.

No parking in the sunset and the damn place is always covered in fog. depressing. If you want a suburban feel, move to a suburban area, like millbrae, burlingame, south city, daly city, etc. (not that the last two are any better weather wise).

Those places are great places for a commuter. Many students live in the Westlake neighborhood in Daly City. But, if you have the choice of living in San Francisco the Sunset is perfect for riding a bicycle to school, being a student. The Sunset district lies next to SFSU and next to gorgeous Ocean Beach. It is foggy there, but this is the foggy city we're talking about isn't it? Muni works excellently throughout the city, so the Mission, North Beach, SOMA, Haight, and the financial districts are that much closer. If you prefer driving and dealing with parking issues, the above mentioned cites are recommended.

I thought the Sunset was the one neighborhood where you can actually park at least somewhat reliably.

It would be near impossible to own a car without reserved parking in North Beach, the Marina, Tenderloin, downtown, etc. Sunset is doable.

My hood has parking for days, serious, you can park a semi, and it's sunny as hell. A plus, I can walk to the ball park and take the train to anywhere. It's called Dogpatch.

The real-estate agents call certain parts of the Tenderloin "Lower Nob Hill". Granted, Nob Hill proper is very close to the 'Loins. Crack-smoking blacks are just a hop, skip and a jump away from Neiman Marcus. Another place close to the Mission is the Excelsior. The Sunset seems very "far away" from the downtown. I don't know why I'm even giving information here as I know almost nothing about S.F. and its livability. All this information comes from visiting friends in those areas.
