Magna/summa cum laude on resume - Page 4

It has nothing to do with grade inflation, it has to do with standards. People bitch so much about grade inflation but they don't realize at the top institutions that most of the people there would be valedictorians at the pleb schools.

In undergrad they gave 1 summa (I'm pretty sure you're only supposed to give out 1), 2 magna and a whole lot of cum laude. And it's supposed to be like the epicenter of grade inflation. Yea, most of my colleagues had high averages, but everyone worked extremely hard to earn their high marks. They can't just give a whole lot of extremely high achieveing people bell curved grades which totally misrepresent their efforts. People who bitch about grade inflation usually went to shitty schools and are frustrated by people from great schools passing them by with that they perceive to be a falsely recognized C.V. At least at the places I went to, grade inflation was a myth. If it looked like everyone got great grades it was because they were some of the best colleges on the planet and the large class of minorities would rather die than go back home with anything less than As.

At my law school, I think it is top 40% for honors, top 10% for high honors, and top 3% for highest honors.

At my university when I was there, I think it was 3.4, 3.6, and 3.8, respectively for cum, magna, and summa, and that applied to the entire school. Which kind of sucked at the time, and for when I applied to law school, because I was in the engineering school and we did not have as much "grade inflation" as the regular school or the business school. I was in the top 15% of the engineering school, but only made cum laude.

3.8 for highest honors. Gee, sounds like you guys had grade inflation! I bet a 2.5 from some unknown mediocre institution (with Ivy profs, of course), is much more valuable than a 3.8 from your school.

Darn that grade inflation.

University of Chicago fits to a 3.25 mean, 50% above, 50 % below, not matter your effort, you are graded compared to your peer group. You could have a 92 final grade and if the mean is 95 you get a B-. That's what top schools do.

I think this sums up my ugrad experience as well. I have friends who went to decent public schools where they cruised to the dean's list every semester with little effort. I won't call grade inflation a complete myth but I'll be damned if these guys could have come to my school and competed with the minorities you reference.
