Gypsy closing early

This is about the surest sign of an awful economy I've seen yet. Gypsy, winner of three Tonys and featuring the best leading actors since Grey Gardens (IMO) is closing early, January 11th. I'm happy for Patti...she is exhausted and needs a rest before her tour with Mandy Patinkin in the spring. But such a landmark show to closing early is a damn shame. http://www.broadwayworld.com/article..._2009_20081214

Conne-

While I appreciate your liking of the Broadway classics and share your adoration for Patti LuPone, I was not blown away by this production of Gypsy. I actually preferred the Bernadette Peters version.

I saw a bootleg of the Bernie version and didn't like it very much. I think this one was leagues better. Good news though: PBS Great Performances is still planning on filming the show in its final days, according to the gossip.

Each to their own. For me, Patty as Evita or Patti in Anything Goes was revealing. Patti in Gypsy was a bit of cliche.

Yeah, Toyota losing money for the first time in 70 years and the Big 3 of Detroit going under really pale in significance next to this.

We'll know it's Armageddon time when a Tina Turner show is not sold out

Evita is obviously a landmark musical, but I think Patti was just great in AG. IMO she is the only person who has measured up to Merman in Anything Goes. It's probably because Patti is the only modern actress who matches The Merm in terms of vocal power and a "larger than life" personality.
