It's very effective at the task for which its name ("tuna cutter") suits it: stripping flesh from the spine of 400-pound tuna with its flexible blade. I was joking about using it like a chef's knife, as I thought would be obvious from the ridiculous proportions of the implement.

The chef knife for a gift would be better, but I doubt most people would even care about the differences.

I personally use a santoku most of the time though (img below). I find it more comfortable to use and easier to handle.

It's all about what you're used to using. A chef's knife feels awkward in my hand because I learned with a santoku.
