Help me choose a safety razor and accessories! - Page 2

The higher the number, the more aggressive the setting. You actually started on the highest setting. Also, you have to open the razor doors BEFORE turning the adjustment knob to actually get the adjustment to work. This all assumes your vintage is in good working order.

My preferred set up at the moment:

Hot shower

Proraso pre-shave cream

Gillette 70s Slim Adjustable razor, regular handle

Gillette "Swedish" Platinum razor blades

91% Isopropol Alcohol (used only to sterilize the razor head before each use, then rinsed off the razor before shaving. do not get this stuff near your face!)

Taylor's Avocado Shaving Cream OR The Gentleman's Refinery Unscented Shaving Cream

Warm water rinse, then COLD water rinse after shaving

Thayer's Rose Petal Alcohol Free Witch Hazel Toner (used as an aftershave splash)

Nivea Sensitive Extra Soothing After Shave Balm (used after I put on the Thayer's first)

The blade you use is extremely important check out West Coast Shaving they offer a number of razor blade sample packs - found this quite helpful when determining the best blade for me and my shaving needs. Website is http://westcoastshaving.com/

If you've got more sensitive skin, I find the shaving creams work and protect better than the shaving soaps. I've been using Truefitt & Hill cream which I find I like better than the Art of Shaving and some other more generic ones. YMMV. It took me going through a handful of creams before I settled on one. I'm still using the Art of Shaving pre-shave oils which I find does a good job for me.
