post #1 of 21
Thread Starter
Good afternoon gentlemen, I will be attending Columbia University this Spring and won't be on their meal plan, I was wondering if any of you knew of any good cheap restaurants that I should check out that are relatively close to the Morningside area, or maybe even Harlem. Thanks

Manhattan Diner on 77th and Broadway. 24/7, quite decent food. Great 24 hour market accross the street.

Saigon Grill - awesome food, cheap Pio Pio - whole chicken for $10, sides are $3 each Neptune Room - great Sunday brunch with a free drink included Columbia Cottage - decent chinese There's a decent Italian place around 120th and Amsterdam whose name I forget Subsconscious is decent for sandwiches Koronets pizza! Ollie's and Tomo are cheap and close, though not amazing You can go get all you can eat at Barnard for life $10-$12 and hit on the Barnard chicks.

Every women's college, or former women's college, is lesbian. Not an admissions policy, though, more self-selection.

This is my nabe.........and suggestions vetted with my son, a Sophmore:

V&T Italian Restaurant on Amsterdam and 110/111th - righteous pizza and pasta;
Amir's on B'way and 114th - Falafel and middle Eastern;
Westway Diner on B'way and 108th - nothing special but the usual diner menu at low prices;
Koronet pizza on 110th and B'way - pizza on steroids, large slices at cheap prices and little taste;
Sal and Carmine Pizza on B'way and 102nd - one of the best pizza makers in NYC;
Symposium on 113th St between B'way and Amsterdam - Grrek food;
Halal cart on 110th and B'way - open 24/7 with the usual cart fare.....my son, a college student likes it;
Saji's on 109th and B'way - take out sushi with a couple - three stools, better prices than Tomo's;
Malaysia Grill on 104th St betweemn B'way and Amsterdam - pretty good authentic Malay cuisine also with the usual SE Asia dishes, best prices;
Chipotle on B'way and 110th St - quick and cheap;
The Heights on B'way and 111th St - basically American menu and cheap; and
Roti Roll on Amsterdam and 109th - Indian fast food

There are many more pricier restaurants so look at menupages.com for additional choices

Labyrinth, the best scholarly bookship in the country, is in that area, and when I go there I always go out to eat after, and it seesm like there are cheap options on every block.

note: study at the barnard library. it's less chaotic than butler.

koronet's is a staple of any columbia kid's mealplan. i hear columbia bagels closed yrs ago though. hamilton's deli across from the law school isn't bad either. columbia cottage and ollie's are the only decent chinese food around there.

Absolute Bagels on B'way and 108th - superior bagels, hot all the time!
WestSide Markets on B'way and 110th - this supermarket has a decent cooked food section for take-out.
