So what? My great grandma is 102 and used to have a glass of whiskey every night. She ate Slovak peasant food for her entire life (oh my God! white potatoes and white rice in her stuffed cabbage with ground chuck!) Thanks for inadvertently supporting my point by using anecdotal evidence: people need to understand this stuff more instead of follow someone else's incorrect assumptions. Food science is very closely related to chemistry. Being ignorant of chemistry doesn't grant license to act like every grain needs the bran on it to avoid cancer and coronary artery disease or get under 10% body fat. It's possible to be healthy without fanatical devotion to being au naturale a la Lalanne.

We are just emerging from the dark ages of dietary advice. The scientists don't have all the answers yet so instead of indulging in paralysis by over-analysis just point me to the dude who leads by example and makes good common sense. Saves me alot of time.

Are you speaking of people that do low GI diets? I do agree that it has gotten a bit extreme as you need carbs to build muscle, and the emphasis on PROTEIN is a bit much. But in the end if you want to cut weight, you just gotta cut calories and have a balanced diet.

'Traditional diets' is a shotgun recommendation: it has so many different meanings and it's so unspecific that it's worthless as a recommendation. Some people traditionally live on rice and beans, some live on stuffed cabbage, and some live on Doritos and Twinkies. They're in no way equal except under the 'traditional diets' umbrella.

I like my great grandma's whisky idea. I agree with Pollan there.

Well, a balanced diet I find, includes sources of sugars, protein, and fats, from nature. Any diet made or athletes will include carbs, protein, and some some form of fat. Sure when you are cutting, you can completely cut out fats, but any dietician will recommend the fats that come from fish, peanut butter, or even nuts. An athelets basic diet is balanced, ask any nutritionist.
Sure you can get by with shoving yourself full of protein shakes, multivitamins, and fish oil capsules, but you can get a majority of your dietary needs from food.

Same with Jack Lalanne - he drinks wine and actually got busted for DUI several years back. He really got slammed for that but hey it's just fermented grape juice. He said he was a wine drinker many years before the arrest.
