AB, I really do hope this gets resolved, but I think that going up a size might not solve your problems. In the jacket, perhaps. But if the shoulders are wider in the 54R and they fit well, the chest might be too full. The waist and the vent issue will probably be better though. However, and this is a big however, I thought you mentioned the trousers did a weird billowing in the upper thigh and hip area. From your pics, it seems the whole trouser needs to be slimmed down. Going up to a 54R jacket means your trouser waist would be 2" wider. You say you normally wear a 34 to a 36 trouser. Well these will probably be a 38 (44-6) trouser. I don't see how they could possibly fit when the current trousers are already too big (unless I am mistaken).

To the OP, enough with the talk. What are you going to do? You seem very hesitant about taking the suit back.

I'll try to take some pics later tonight and start a new thread. The Foxx can jump in, as he probably has a better understanding of its purpose.

It's just a silk "strap" that attaches the vents to the sides of the jacket. It's not meant to keep the side vents closed nor is it meant to remedy and ill fitting jacket with gaping vents, it's just more so that they don't fly around while you are walking or if it gets windy or something and probably to keep them more in place when you sit or something. It's not that big of a deal and it's similar in functionality to a flower holder in the back of your lapel.

Au contraire, a lot can be done with padding.

The main problem with strapped vents?

The strap makes it feel like you have to go poo poo any second.

I'm sort of paying attention. I have a staff meeting in few minutes where I have to frighten people, so I've been practicing my grimace.

Actually, the strap holds the sides together. That is, it's about 18" and joins the underflap of one sidebody to the other. The outer vent flap still hangs completely free, but the strap prevents the sides from kicking out, and helps prevent the vents from opening.

I think it is actually very intrusive, and defeats the purpose of vents.

One of these came unbidden on an Oxxford MTM that I have...I kept it for awhile out of curiosity, but it drove me crazy one day and...

Same here, I tried a tailor in LA who did this, unbidden. I think I wore the coat once and then got the scissors.
