Instead of a paper towel, may I suggest you upgrade to CVS' cloth tape - Voxsartoria approved!
My general rule that applies is a practical one, if you have not had a haircut for a while then look at the collar neck band, specifically if you have a tendency to overheat your body may trap the moisture of the closed collar band (the heat turning into moisture) and the oils from your neck setting into it thus showing a ring around the collar. I then proceed to have the shirt washed at my local Chinese Laundry at a cost of $1.75 each (NY City). If the collar only shows a very very light or dull ring and the shirt is not wrinkled badly (as I only wear cotton no quick blends of wash & dry) then I wear it a maximum one more time before it goes to commercial laundering. This is a personal quirk that eeach one has to decide for himself. Ideally once is more than enough, but in todays hard economic time your choices are wearing it again, or the laundry route either doing it yourself or the commercial laundry process. Hope this helps.
I was going to recommend plastic slip covers of the type that people used to put on furniture to protect it from spills, but I have to confess your idea has a certain Zen simplicity to it. If you make a thermos of coffee the night before and leave an oatmeal bar on your nightstand, you've got this whole morning thing nailed.
