What's a shoe thread without mentioning Clarks Desert Boots? Or for that matter, Topsiders (brown originals)? Both are less dressy looking alternatives while still staying away from the trainer look.

Suede is great, but not if you have messy winter or wet weather where you are.
I don't know what you're talking about... 75% of my shoes are chucks and I go on plenty of dates in them. For the times when I'm "dressing up" a bit, I've got a nice pair of black chelseas. If you want sneakers, Creative Rec has some I really enjoy, there are also some decent higher end Pumas and the like. Frankly, I date girls who wear chucks on dates, too, so maybe it's just the crowd we hang around.

I wouldn't wear Chucks to a date at a nice restaurant but I would at a coffee shop.

Chucks aren't appropriate for many date situations aside from going to see a local band in a bar. (Ref: Sonic Youth video for "Dirty Boots")

Nike cortez are the best. Creative recreation suck if u have to actually walk a significant distance. I had 5 pair and sold em all on ebay after jogging made my feet bleed. Chcuks r played out, no offense, but everyone and their grandmaw wears them: kind of like slap bracelets or swatches, plz put em away with the fanny packs.

Chucks will never be played out because they are perfect (although they would be more perfect if they were made in the US still).

i think the Chucks ability to be played out is cool. Its like THE casual shoe. I like how it is so played out that it isnt even considered "stylish". my 2 cents.

I'd like to eventually do a rotation of reddish-brown boat shoes for summer and brown wingtip boots for winter.

Anyway, I don't have neither the money nor the steeze (I don't want to change my style too abruptly--I feel that doing so might come off as contrived) for that right now.

Regardless, I'd like something nicer than my current New Balance 574's to wear with my APC NC's. Something that could last for a while in Chicago winters would be nice. I'm trying to get past this whole athletic-shoe-companies-making-faux-vintage-shoes trend, and have considered those brogued wingtip sneakers and more understated sneakers like the A.P.C. ones. While I'd like shoes with a slim profile, I have really flat feet and thus need both a moderate level of support (read: no canvas shoes) and space to slip in orthotics (read: the ability to rip out the insoles).

Other than the wingtip sneakers and the APC sneakers, any suggestions?

+1 for Creative Rec's being the most uncomfortable sneaker ever mass produced.
