improving my diet, no more Spaghetti?

Thread Starter
i'm trying to improve my diet, and mainly trying to focus on a low calorie diet. aside from salad, the only tasty yet "healthy" meal i can imagine is spaghetti and marinara sauce (from pregro, ragu, etc.). Now, i could be quite ill informed, but is that true at all? Marinara sauce has veggies, no cream, and is full of simple carbs.

Ok, thanks

Simple carbs are bad. Pasta is a calorie monster.

Not to be a dick but it shouldn't be too hard to find this info on the web without being told in this thread. It's all over the place.

nearly impossible and also unnecessary to eliminate completely. everything, but protein, in moderation.

Well you are going to have to bite the bullet and eat complex carbs after a workout, and spaghetti is a fine choice for that.

'Complex carbs' is such a huge oversimplification that it's almost worthless.

Yeah but most people don't have time for the nitty gritty science behind dieting. As a general rule, I think eating complex carbs (along with protein and veggies) for post-workout is a safe recommendation. Eliminating anything starchy or complex and sticking with fruits and vegetables seems a bit extreme.

I like a lot of baked fish. Baked chicken without skin and small pork chops (what pork chops used to be a few years ago, not the 12 ouncers they sell today).

Most spices can add a lot of flavor without adding many calories. If you like vegetables, a lot of them are really low in calories. There are a lot of sites you can check to get basic info. Weight Watchers can send you regular Emails; I'm not a member of theirs and I get them. They have a lot of good basic information.

There are actually a lot of things you can do to get good low calorie meals, although you will want to be really careful when you eat in restaurants.

In general, pasta is high in calories. You will want to carefully measure portions if you eat pasta very often.

they do have whole wheat pasta now. portion control is going to be key however.

An awesome way to make "no carb" spaghetti is to use a Saladacco spiral slicer and make the spaghetti from zucchini. This thing is the bomb.

There's already a squash that mimics pasta. It's called a....spaghetti squash.

That contraption is just kitchen clutter.

The spiralized zucchini "noodles" mimic pasta a thousand times better than spaghetti squash, and the saladacco has more uses. It takes up very little space.

Whole wheat spaghetti isn't bad. There's also soy spaghetti made from tofu or something, I haven't tried it but some clients recommended it to me. You can probably find it at your local asian supermarket.
