Car Insurance

Dunno if anyone here can help, but web searches yield mostly car insurance offers, not actual answers... I live in Maryland, where my car insurance is reasonable. It had been more in PA, and significantly more in NJ. My question is, does anyone know if rates are higher in DC? I may be moving within DC limits soon, and want to know if this is going to affect my bottom line cost of living... Thanks.

Have you talked to your agent? I sold my car when I moved from Northern Virginia to DC, but my guess is that insurance rates will be higher in DC because of the higher rate of car thefts.  Your cost of living is likely to be more affected by the much higher cost of reserved parking (unless street parking is readily available).

YES. Car insurance is higher in DC, at least with our insurance company -- USAA. My wife and I moved from Bethesda to the Palisades area of DC about 3 years ago. Our insurance went up quite a bit even though there seems to be [knocking on wood] fewer car thefts/break-ins, etc. in our neighborhood in DC than there were in Bethesda. I don't recall exactly, but I think the increase was something like 30-40%. I'm sure your insurance company could tell you pretty accurately what your rate would go up to though if you give them a call.

EDIT: Thanks, guys. Grrr. I called my agent - why didn't I just do that first? They won't insure in DC, and said I can expect my rate to go up 40%... Bethesda and Silver Spring are looking better and better

I went through this exact excercise last week.  I am moving from Charlotte, NC to DC  I compared the increases between Charlotte and DC, as well as Charlotte and Arlington.  My premium with State Farm will increase by approximately 4% to be insured in Arlington, VA and 54% to be insured in DC. My car will garaged in DC and I will Metro to work. Supposedly, I am receiving a discount for this. Not sure how much though.

Did you decide between living in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the Federal Colony of DC?

I think I am going with DC. I found a place downtown last weekend. Thanks for your help and advice.
