I was really taken back by a friend yesterday, who called me up and asked me if i was interested in hearing a business idea of his.

I told him i was, ofcourse, interested in listening to his idea and talking about it, and come to find out he was pushing an Amway company called quixtar, i was shocked that he would put himself out there with a company basically know for bullshit.

It seems like a cult, they're very sold on the idea, and i'm just not drinking the punch.

whats the most professional way to call bullshit on this one, without risking a professional relationship.

Have you guys had this happen to you, and when did that person re-enter the real world?

Cutco once, but who hasn't had someone from that company contact them? Their knives are pretty nice though.

Yeah they call themselves "Vector Marketing" or something. Fucking hilarious. They also say that peddling their shit is an internship.

Six times that I can recall:

One - a professional colleague I respected very much...before she approached me
One - a semi-professional associate I didn't respect so much
One - neighbor trying to recruit me on adaptogens (namely using AND selling)
Three random people.

Each time I told them that I already have my own opportunity that I was devoted to and it wouldn't be fair to them to get my leftover time. Then I cut off all contact.

My neighbor eventually got over it and we eventually became cordial again. Then I promptly moved far away from him and his evil spawn*








(*Just kidding - he's a good guy)

My mom bought a huge set of Cutco knives about 5-6 years ago from a friend of mine who sold it as his summer job. The knives are actually super nice and the blades are still very sharp. I also think they have a free lifetime sharpening service where they will come to your house. For about $800, I think she got a really good deal considering it was over 15 knives.

this stuff seems like networking suicide to me, i was mostly dissappointed simply because i thought he truely had something serious to talk about prior to this, then he dragged me out to a diner to talk about amway, lol.

Yes. I ran into an old friend at a coffee shop and struck up the whole "so what are you up to now?" conversation. Turns out he had a fantastic business opportunity for me and as luck would have it, he had all his presentation materials with him in his bag. I suddenly developed an appointment I needed to be at shortly and extricated myself from that situation.

They are REALLY expensive, but they are quality. My grandfather has a set someone sold him once and they've never needed sharpening. I bought a pocket knife from them that I've been quite happy with. I think selling them in retail shops would have been a much better business model for their products. Don't know why they didn't go that route.

I have a friend that throws sex toy parties too. It's sort of like an Amway in that it's a pyramid scheme.
