Chinese food in SF?

I have a friend coming in from NYC and she has demanded Dim Sum.

Where in SF should I go to get my Dim Sum vittles on?

Also, where is a good inexpensive Chinese lunch spot on Chinatown? I work in Jackson Square and feel a need sometimes for fat and salt.

Best dim sum in San Francisco is Ton Kiang on Geary and something like 24th. Good Chinese lunch near you at R&G and Lychee Garden, though neither are particularly inexpensive.

Matt turned me on to R&G. It is great.

All my favorite Portsmouth Square dives are gone.

Is Ton Kiang the big palace looking place out in the avenues?

If R&G is good enough for you and Manton, it's good enough for me. My only questions: Do they serve "Gui Lo" in RTW?

Ton Kiang is an ugly, strip mall modern looking place on the left side of the street if you are going down Geary from downtown. It really is good. R&G is great, though if your friend really loves Chinese, the best thing to do is have dinner out at Fook Yuen in Milbrae on your way to, or from, the airport.

Koi Palace is very good for dim sum but its located in Daly City near Serramonte. Ton Kiang is go good as well as Yank Sing. If you or your friend want to eat in Chinatown for dim sum try New Asia on Pacific between Stockton and Grant.

For dinner R &G and Great Eastern on Jackson.

+1 for R&G and Koi Palace. Delicious! I can't wait to get back to the Bay Area. Ton Kiang is ok, I haven't been there in a while though so they might have changed chefs.

Friends and I used to enjoy the really big dim sum place at Pacific and Stockton (with a generic-sounding name like "Asia Pacific" or something), but that was 10-plus years ago.

+1 on R&G. Their fried crab and soy sauce chicken is really good. And if you do come down to Millbrae (it's not that far from SF), Fook Yuen is good but IMO their dim sum is better than their dinner. For dinner I'd go to The Kitchen or Hong Kong Flower.

When I was in San Fran for the first SF get-together, I went to R&G three times in a week. Yes, it's that good.

For R&G lounge,

-salt & pepper crab is a must
-salt & pepper squid for appetizer is to die for
-chicken nugget/shark fin soup in individual bowls
-stew oxtail in clay hot pot

almost everything that was advertised as house special was good
