Well... didn't get on top of that one quick enough and the 33s are sold out. Bummer. Prob should get some new jeans anyways so I guess I will go with the standard 710XX.

For those who aren't local to one of these better shops- do you typically order them raw and soak/wash at home, then mail them back if you intend to get hemmed? Or have the shop soak/wash for you and hem on the spot? I can see it both ways... nice to be able to try on before committing, but easier of course to not have to mail back and forth.

I need some help picking a pair of Samurais. I'm looking for something that (post soak) will have a leg opening of 7.5-8", good enough to wear boots with em. I was thinking the SV5000VX, but they're out of the size 27. Would the size 28 work well? It has a 30" waist and I usually buy jeans with a 29" waist and stretch them out to 31" (have done this with APC and Kicking Mules). So I guess it's the 28 in SV5000VX if that'll work or perhaps a 28 in S001JP. Any thoughts / suggestions?

You do realize that the size 28 will shrink from those stated 30" (which I persnally never encountered, 2" bigger than tag size) to 28" and you want to stretch it out to 31" so, 3"? It's a bit much IMO.
If you are so concerned about leg opening, than take a tapered cut like S0500 or S710

Until you get a feel for Samurai sizing, I would recommend doing what is bolded to make sure that they fit. Once the jeans are hemmed or washed/soaked, you can't return them, and I doubt you want to be stuck with a pair of $300+ jeans that don't fit.

Now that I've gotten a feel for Samurai's sizing, I just have them hemmed to about 3" longer than I want the inseam to end up and have them sent to me raw. That way, I can do the soaking myself, and they still end up at the right length.

Ah, ok. I think I might go with the S5000VXs. Is it possible to size down one from it? Instead of grabbing a tagged 31, get a 30 instead since the legs turn out to be just a tad slimmer.

Shouldn't be a problem. I've sized down from my actual waist measurement on that cut and it has worked out fine.

Measurements pre and post soak

W 17.5 - 17.5 (Hanger method)
FR 11.5 - 11.2
BR 15.5 - 14.5
Thigh 12.5 - 12
Knee 9.5 - 9
Hem 8.5 - 8
Inseam 38.5 - 36

Love the fit but I'm not sure there's still some shrinkage left in the jeans because the leg twist is minimal.. I'm debating whether I should do a second soak.
Also, this pair made me realize that I should've gone with TTS on 1947 501 but I guess it's too late now..because I've been wearing it for two months.

Samurais are well known for taking multiple soaks to get all of the shrinkage out. I would definitely do a second soak, and probably a third one after that, if that is your goal.

selling a pair of S5000VX, sz 34 soaked once, unaltered in marketplace for your consideration.

I'm ordinarily a 33 in most pants and my true waist measures to a 33. Are your measurements straight out of the soak or after a bit of wear? Wondering if I should get the 33 or 34...

Also question on the length... I have midget legs, wear a 30" inseam in most pants. My NS I have been rocking a massive double cuff but would like to go a different look on these... what do folks do in a situation like this? Quandry is compounded by the fact that I live in VT so little access to a good shop to have them hemmed later on down the line. I was thinking of having BiG hot soak and then chain stitch hem to 32" or something? Rock a short single cuff or a stack and re-evaluate as they shrink more with age?
First pair of "better", jap, unsanforized denim, so thanks in advance for whatever assistance you can provide.

sorry_ 'got too preoccupied lately, so i wasn't able to give a more complete reply. [this] might be too lately, but, anyway [for those who might want to know], the bolded numbers on the left side were post double-soak meaurements, while the "raw" measurements are on the right side. to add to sir commodore's reply, BiG will factor in the shrinakage allowance when they hem them raw. so, just make it clear on your hemming instruction that you would like a 32" inseam post soak/wash.... which only means that if established post wash shrinkage= 2", they'll hem @34" [raw].

What size are those s001jps? Could you let me know what the current measurements are? I am trying to decide between these and the 0500xx. Thanks
