Right now I'm thinking my best bet would be to join a gym and pay for something like 8 half hour personal training sessions, once a week for two months. I figure that paying upfront and scheduling them at reasonable intervals will function as motivation.

My questions are...

Is 15-20 pounds in 3.5-4 months a good/reasonable goal? Trying to drop from about 185 to 170-165?

Is paying a few hundred bucks in gym membership/training wise or wasteful? Think I could just do it on my own or at my university gym?

Does anyone have any experience with personal training at either Golds or 24 hour fitness? Obviously it'll vary from location to location, but I'm curious...

Any other advice/suggestions? As soon as I get back next semester I'm going to be going from basically inactive to a real workout schedule, so any advice in getting going in that regard would be appreciated as well.

Cheers!

Not only could you easily lose 20 lbs of fat, but you can replace it with 5-10lbs of lean mass that will make you look a lot better and actually keep that fat off a lot easier.

I have worked every day with a trainer and let me tell you, you can get very good results. It can make it more fun if you like them, and they'll push you to do things you wouldn't have tried by yourself. It's almost easier to work yourself to death if you're just following orders. You still need to be highly motivated, but honestly if you have the means, it's a great way to go. I train alone now but I can see why some of my friends see their trainer 4 times a week.

Insp86,
Have a body composition test done. It will tell you what your resting metabolism is. The test is about $40 and can be done by a registered dietitian. My resting metabolism is 2,582 calories per day. To loose weight I eat less calories than I burn.

I've seen a few personal trainers at 24 fitness, in my professional opinion they ranged from average to embarrassing to the point I almost stepped in on behalf of the client. Myself, I have helped many fat people lose 50+ lbs and start healthy lifestyles, who I am sure could not have ever done it without a trainer keeping them accountable. There have also been clients who I worked with for 1 year who never dropped any of their (considerable) weight, because I couldn't make them control their own diet. What kind of person are you? IMO once a week when you're out of shape and not used to exercising isn't enough. You need to find something to keep you compliant, and you need to be exercising (doing cardio at least), while maintaining a healthy diet w/ calorie deficit, 5 days a week if you want to meet your goals. Additionally since the sessions are only 30 minutes, I don't see what you could learn in that amount of time. It certainly isn't enough time to even get though one workout.

Not a bad idea, but remember that both your BF estimate and resting metabolism estimate are not very accurate. The best way to find your RMR is very expensive and takes a few VO2 stress tests, and a body bug clipped to you for a few days (a $2000 piece of tech).
