Compounding my sins is that the front bumper cover is the European and not the North American version...no side reflectors, another thing that bothered me aesthetically.

I roll the same way here in CT. No front plate or sidemarkers on my Merc's amg bumper.

Oh, and by the way the new M3 looks like shit. The E46 is by far the better looking.

+juan.

And I don't have a front plate in CA on my M3, and I haven't had a problem. But I consider myself lucky. My friend runs her BMW without a front plate, but has had 3 front plate citations... luckily, she knows cops that sign it off for her.

I've owned a few BMWs in my time, and I like the old and new ones. Here's my current BMW, as Bangled as it gets (okay, actually Warminged, via Hooydonk):

Sure, a dramatic change from the E39/E38, which are more understated and elegant, but the new cars have a different sort of beauty. One problem with them is that they don't photograph well, as a lot of the "flame surfacing" design takes advantage of 3 dimensions. They're also more dependent on color choice and wheel choice. The M Coupe, for instance, looks great in Alpine White, Sapphire Black, and Imola Red, and adding the ZCP or CSL wheels really makes it pop. This from someone that didn't like the Z4 when it was first released - I had to see one in the metal to change my mind.

And if the OP doesn't need rear seats, some sticky tires and a new diff will have you hanging with a stock E92 M3 up to 60. I went with Pirelli P-Zeros and a 3.91 final drive, though some Z4M owners went with the 4.10 gears.

Requoted for the sheer joy of it.

Whoa. Some obscenities sprung, unbidden, from my breast just then.

I drove a three pedal E92 shortly after it hit our shores and was underwhelmed. I liked what's under the right foot - but the rest of the feel and intangibles were crap - too blunted, watered down and "civilized". Don't care for the lines, either.

I'll never give up my three pedal E46 ZCP.

I still see E30 M3s around the neighborhood now and then. I know most of them are pushing 170k miles or a lot more, but they still look great. The dark gray Anthracite is especially bad ass.

This is not my car; I found it on the internet. However, it goes to show that with a little work that the E92 is simply drop dead gorgeous in the right color with the right wheels (Morralloy VS8, evidentially unobtanium with lots of production problems). I currently DD a ZHP coupe, and am looking to upgrade to the 335i. I very much wish that BMW would introduce the European-only M-sport package for the 335 - a 335 with a better steering wheel (can be done aftermarket), shadowline trim, better wheels w/o RFTs, and a Dinan Stage 2/JB3 running mid to low 4 0-60s is simply an awesome car -- there is no need for the M. My ZHP has the extra thick Alcantara wheel before they switched to the perforated leather -- and it is my favorite part of the car hands down and one I have grown to wish more cars had. If the above car had the M-package (hate the chrome trim, love the muted look of the shadowline), it would look even better. As it is, it is still a great looking car, and certainly, in my mind, has a more beautiful side profile than the E46. The real let down of the car is the rear end -- very bland, and the fact that it currently must be ordered with stupid wood trim (I hate wood in cars) or too shiny aluminum.

I have a love/hate relationship with the alcantara wrapped steering wheel. Love the feel/hate the pilling and tricky up-keep. I have a dedicated electric razor for dealing wih the pills. Lives in the glove box.

I also am living on the edge without the front license plate.

I've put 9K miles on mine thus far (requested a new one at time of sale) so I suppose I cannot speak to long term wear. However, I wipe it down when I wash the car with a damp microfiber cloth and have not seen any wear issues with it whatsoever. Supposedly BMW is pretty liberal about replacing them for free if you are under new car/CPO warranty as it is a known issue.
