I bought my first real bottle of Scotch

I figured every person who claims to enjoy fine spirits should have one bottle of decent Scotch. Now we always have Jack Daniels No. 7 or Dewars around but I decided that this holiday season I would treat myself to an entry level bottle of the good stuff despite never having really been a Scotch person. At the very least my Scotch drinking friends would appreciate it. I took an extra $25 out of my wallet and bought a 12 y/o bottle of The Glenlivet, the only single malt they had priced below $50. I had a some last night mixed with Coke........just kidding.......two ice cubes only and thought it was nice, smooth and mellow, a good drink to sip on. I did not become a Scotch person overnight, but definitely see the appeal over the junk I get in mixed drinks. Does anyone have an opinion on The Glenlivet, this was an impulse buy, I did not do any research.

I just bought my first bottle of "real" scotch a couple of weeks back myself. I opted for Glenfiddich over Glenlivet though, mostly because it had been a long time since I'd had Glenlivet and couldn't remember whether I enjoyed it or not. And I never drink with rocks, neat or with a drop of water only.

Glenlivet is my go to brand. Obviously, price is a factor but a nice drink and not so peatily strong.
I tried Dalwhinnie (sic?) last autumn after some enthusiastic posts on here but was less than overwhelmed.

Try one that rhymes with that; Balvenie. For your first shot, got with the 12 y/o double cask.

I agree with Pio. The Balvenie is a great scotch at all of the price/age levels. The doublewood is a great whisky that most people would enjoy.

For all you beginners, scotch is definitely an acquired taste. I began drinking whisk(e)y neat only around a year ago. But now I have developed a taste for it.

Great bottle of single malt. When you're ready to buy another bottle give Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban a try. It has a nice port finish, very smooth. Only a few bucks more than Glelivet 12.
