Can different red wines hit you differently (hangoverwise)?

The other night we were out with some friends. 4 people in total

Restaurant = 3 bottles of French reds. Not cheap restaurant & not cheap wines.

Back to theirs for a last bottle = Another French red. Tasted decent, but I dont know the brand / vinyard / etc...

Thing is that I woke up with the ugliest hangover I have had in a while. To say that I can generally hold my own with the booze is an understatement, so the equiv of one bottle of red over the course of an evening with a massive meal should not have fazed me, but I was fuzzy headed, exhaused and just downright wrecked yesterday.

Looking back I feel like this happens sometimes with reds. I dont know if its just my reaction or if its something inherant to the drink (impurities, sediments, etc...)

Does anyone else get disproportionately bad hangovers when drinking red?

Red wine is infamous for giving the worst hangover. Personally, I'm generally OK with it, particularly if I stick to light-bodied reds. Anything in the 12.5-13.5% alcohol content range is usually fine, while some of the big, fruity, high-alcohol wines (which usually come from New World wineries but can sometimes be French) will ruin me the next day, even if they are quite expensive wines. I think this has to do with the nature of the wine itself, not the slight increase in alcohol content.

I find wine to give the worst hangovers next to cheap alleged champagne.

Even malt liqueur is easy by comparison.

I've been getting rough gin hangovers the past few months. But I think I generally get those after drinking on an empty tum

i had the worst hangover last week after we threw a party at our apartment. I did switch from beer, to red wine, to an ouzo mix, back to red wine then to sparking white... needless to say I was absolutely wrecked. worst hangover i've ever experienced. on a good note, the wifey ran out and got me a large pizza and ferris buelers day off came on telly. good hangover day.

Try organic red wine - less sulphates which apparently cause the worst hangover effects. I've never had a hangover from organic wine, though I've never had more than one bottle in a sitting, or mixed it with anything, so more research is needed.

If you want a really bad hangover try mixing generous measures of port and guinness.

I used to get really bad hangovers with gin back in the day. I loved gin and tonic so much though that I kept drinking them and now I don't get hangovers from that anymore. I get bad headaches from red wine, I wonder if I drank it more frequently if the headaches would go away.

I've never had a hangover from drinking red wine since I don't like it. However, the other day I had 2 bottles of chardonnay, plus a few martinis that absolutely fucked me up. I was drunk off my ass and having a hangover at the same time. The headache was so unbearable that I finally took some painkillers to be able to sleep.

I definitely feel worse after drinking red compared to white. For that reason, I tend to drink more white.

I recall reading something (somewhere) about how the tyramine content of red wine affects how strong the hangover will be.

I have tasted a few of these ones and I havent liked one the least bit. They all seemed to lack and real flavor and had a sour sour finish.

I think I am going to keep red consumption to meals for a while. I had a night on the white last night and feel much better today considering that I drank multiples of what I had the other night.

I don't get hangovers from red wine.

I had to stop drinking gin because it absolutely destroys my stomach. It usually takes two days to recover from a night of drinking gin.

You are right on with the big, fruity, wines causing horrific hangovers. That is what I tend to drink, but I always make sure I drink plenty of water. Some benadryl and advil before bed helps block the horrific headaches if I forget to drink water. I drink wine..and a lot of it, but I generally dont get hangovers anymore from it.
